- Shareware and gore: Remembering the original version of Blood - 2 April 2022
From 2010 to 2014 Richard Cobbett wrote Crapshoot, a column about rolling the dice to bring random games back into the light. Today, a shooter that wore its heart on its sleeve. Somebody's heart, anyway. And their liver, lungs, and three different flavours of goo. .. Read more.
- 1997 horror shooter Blood is coming back - 7 December 2018
Blood tells the tale of an undead gunslinger named Caleb, who's out for revenge against the dark god Tchernobog, who hosed him around one way or another in the late 19th century. It featured a blend of conventional and supernatural weapons and enemies, various multiplayer modes (although online play required services like TEN), and blood out the wazoo—it's not kidding with that title.  It was originally released in 1997 by Monolith, and it's coming back under the care and control of Nightdive Studios , the outfit that's previously given us updates of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil , System Shock , and Forsaken .  "Blood stood up extremely well over time and we are taking care to preserve all the qualities that made the game so special," producer Daniel Grayshon said. "It really only needs minor updates to provide a better user experience for contemporary aud…

Not many games start off by letting you chuck entire sticks of dynamite around, quoting old horror movies as you go. As with many shooters of the era though, the best levels were in the shareware version, first released a few months before the full game—and top of them all was Dark Carnival. It wasn’t just a shooting gallery, but a whole collection of fun little distractions like kicking heads into targets, tightrope wa…
