- 2026 Release - 14 November 2025
Hi, my name is Pieter, (pronounced Peter) the developer of Mini Worlds. I develop this game/toy in my free time, after my day job and my job as a dad of 2 kids. As you can image, life is pretty busy.As I strive to deliver a polished product, I don't want to rush the release. Let me tell you about some key points why I will take more time:A game/toy about building a world isn't very fun with only a few objects to place. Creating more content for you to enjoy which is performant and coherent with the rest of the art is a whole process.I am a big advocate for controller support in games, since it allows people with a disability to also enjoy games when they use custom controllers. Adding proper support takes time.Minimizing bugs makes it more enjoyable for everyone to play Mini Worlds. Some bugs are easy to spot and fix but some bugs are set to make my life even harder.High standards I've…

Object VariantsThe variant system allows you to either pick a specific object you want to place or let it be randomized when placing. For example: You can place a lot of trees and instead of needing to select a random one each time, the game will do that for you. Plus, you still have full control when placing a specific tree.Improved World GenWhenever you create a new world, the terrain and some objects will be generated for you. The new system separates the terrain and object generation, which makes it more fun for you to pick a new world and makes it easier for me to add new generators. Fun fact: the object placement is based on the technique from Horizon Zero Dawn's object placement.UI ScalingA new setting has been added, the ability to make the UI bigger or smaller. The main reason for this is Steam Deck support. To be verified, the UI cannot be too small. Another reason is for play…

Double Row Build MenuSince some categories have a lot of objects to select from, the build menu now shows two rows. This will make it easier for you to find the right decoration to place or tree to plant. No More? That's it for the past months. Why? We welcomed our second child into this world, which took all of our time. Hopefully I will have more time to add new things in the coming months.

Better DecorationsPreviously, objects could only be rotated every 90 degree. This is now changed to every 2 degree. This means you will be able to place objects with greater detail. Speaking of greater details, you can conquer water with a Pier. Simply place a pier and the water and get a full and valid tile to place objects on! And to help with selecting objects to place, the UI now uses tabs instead of a single-weirdly long scroll bar. Note: This might not be the final iteration of this Object-Placement-UIBasic TutorialBasically, what the title says, a basic tutorial. If you are new to the game and you want to help with the controls and gameplay, this tutorial popup will help guide you!UI OverhaulEvery UI element has been looked at, changes have been considered and things have changed! Buttons are rounded, windows have color and popup will pop more. Pun intended. More OptimizationsIn…

Photo Mode From some research I've done on similar games, the community tends to show their creations. A photo mode will give you -the community- more control over your screenshots. To share your wonderful worlds from it's best side! You can fly around freely, change depth of field and other effects and take a screenshot of your own Mini World ;) New Pathfinding Before, every tile had a pathfinding node which would lead to very bulky paths and would not allow for differences in townsfolk behavior. With the new pathfinding, objects you place will determine the nodes which will make the townsfolk a lot more believable. Optimizations When some of you will fill an entire world with the most epic cities and detailed parks, the amount of objects and townsfolk will cause performance issues. To avoid these issues early on, some optimizations were made to still allow for above 60 FPS gameplay wi…

New Save Data Before, all of the save data was stored in a single file. This made it tricky to get specific information that would only be visible in the loading screen, like your world's name. As of right now, the save data is put into separate files and with a screenshot as well. This makes the new loading window look very nice. Preparations Development for some features have started but are not ready yet, like: A photo mode. A camera with more motion, to get that perfect screenshot! Pier and bridge objects. Build a foundation to build 'on water'. Controller support. This might sound weird for a town builder, but I like my games to be playable with a controller as well. Did you say Demo? Generating the just the right worlds, building cities of your dreams and sharing screenshots with the community is what Mini Worlds is about and the demo will have it all. Not all features and buildab…

I hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday and a happy new year. I took some time off game development and focused on family. Now that the new year has started, so did I start with some changes. Devlog 1 From now on, I will make small video devlogs on changes made to Mini Worlds: Free Placement In the development log from October, I've mentioned decorations. A different system to add some extra objects to a tile to decorate your buildings. I've now turned both the building system and decoration system into one. During development, I only have to specify if it's a free placement object and the placement system will do its thing. Particles To make the feature of adding objects to the world feel a lot better, I've added particle effects to it up. New Tree Generation Previously, the trees were special made objects containing 3 trees. This meant that with world generation, it could only p…

1. Audio As the header suggests, audio has been added to the game. Either when placing a building, wheat field or removing trees, you'll be able to get an audio cue. If you want to hear the new sound effects, head over to the Discord and take a look in the #mini-worlds-dev channel. 2. Decorations This is the main feature this month and required a rework of a lot of major systems. But now, you'll be able to place smaller decorations next to 'main' objects. Want to add a fence or hedge to a house, that can be done. Are you into cliffs? Simple place rocks along a shoreline. This unlocked a whole lot of possibilities unimagined before! If you have suggestions for buildings, features or anything else, Join the Discord and head to the 'suggestions' channel. That was October. Stay tuned for another Development Log in November!

1. Villagers As can read in the previous article, villagers were added because I thought the world felt a little empty. When making the announcement trailer, nothing was happening despite there being numerous buildings. Now, every house will spawn 1 or 2 villagers who will walk around town. This is a great first step into making the world feel more alive. 2. Terraforming The world generation can give you a great looking world but sometimes you want to adjust a tile by yourself. Well, I'm working on such a tool. Currently, it's only a single tile, but that will change soon™ 3. Dragging Already a Quality of Life feature! When developing or making screenshots, it was very tedious to keep clicking when building a town. So now, simply drag a building, road or tree across the world and it will be placed. If you have suggestions for buildings, features or anything else, Join the Discord and he…
- Update: Villagers - 11 September 2024
When I was making the announcement trailer, something felt off ... the worlds felt empty. Naturally, after some necessary features were completed, villagers were added to Mini Worlds! Now, your worlds, cities and villages will have people roaming around!
