There’s a boss fight near the midpoint of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny that I genuinely did not think I’d be able to get through. Not due to any intended challenge or a jarring difficulty spike, but due to its 2002-ass design: fixed camera angles suddenly switching and changing my directional input mid fight; a huge impassible environmental obstacle just short enough for enemy projectiles to pass over; getting stunlocked by ranged attacks that I can’t even see coming... Of all the Capcom games I have played whose lineage can be traced back to its Resident Evil and Devil May C Devil May Cry 5 (PS4) Review ry origins, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is by far the most bizarre in terms of tone. As a direct sequel to 2000’s Onimusha: Warlords , it continues the original’s focus on fast paced, hack-n’-slash samurai action, perplexing environmental puzzles, a nightmarish, zombie-adjacent threat towards humanity in the form of demons (properly referred to as “Genma”) and the undeniably cool, signature soul-sucking gameplay mechanic of the protagonist’s Oni Gauntlet (a.k.a. Demon Gauntlet). Believe it or not, it’s already been over six years since Capcom’s 2019 remaster of the first Onimusha title, Onimusha: Warlords , arrived on store shelves. While the retouched classic ultimately sold 300,000 copies across all platforms (well below the over 2 million copies that the original PlayStation 2 version sold in 2000), in that same month Capcom would also go on to release its remake of Resident Evil 2 to immense critical acclaim, selling 3 million copies worldwide in its first week.
