I’m AJ, the music composer for Coffee Talk and Coffee Talk Episode 2, and I’m back once again to compose the beloved, chill lo-fi music for our latest game.When Chorus decided to continue the story of the Coffee Talk universe, it became obvious that one of the most important things to keep in mind was never losing the relaxing atmosphere that the music helped create in the previous games. So it was no surprise when they approached me again to create more chill, jazzy music. Seeing how Coffee Talk and Coffee Talk Episode 2 were so loved by players for their comforting experience, including the music, we decided to stick with what worked best: jazzy tunes and lo-fi chill hop music to listen to while drinking warm coffee in the middle of the rain. Today, we’d like to tell you a little bit about the themes in Coffee Talk Tokyo’s story.We came up with these themes at the same time as we were coming up with characters: as much as our characters are all individuals with many different backgrounds and issues to sort through, we also wanted them to be united by some shared worries and desires.Our themes have evolved quite a lot over time, and the various ideas we considered are still reflected in some of the game’s arcs: the meaning of a soul, the search for a home, remembering and forgetting. Today, we’d like you to meet the Barista’s right-hand person, their trusted assistant, Vin!Vin was born because we wanted players to have a character in the game who felt like a constant presence at the café; someone who creates a thread throughout the story, even as other characters come and go. At the same time, we wanted them to feel different from Freya’s presence in the first Coffee Talk, both in personality and in role. That’s how the idea of an Assistant Barista came to be.Then, as we spent more time with Vin, they became much more than that, as characters tend to do. Vin is a human with a peculiar backstory. They’re a sweetheart who puts others first, a hard-working person who’s been through the wringer, a music lover, a dog person AND a cat person (why not both?), and many things besides.
