Here's a nice surprise for you: Petroglyph has updated its strategy RTS, Star Wars: Empire at War , 17 years post-release. The update mainly allows the game to run in 64-bit, but it also fixes some minor bugs, applies some balance changes, fixes out-of-sync issues with multiplayer, and stops some behavior issues with units (thanks, RPS ). With the update to 64-bit, you should no longer encounter Out of Memory issues. There have been updates made to several maps, graphic assets, and core functionality of some of the units used in space and land battles. Read more

Star Wars: Empire At War wasn't a great game, but it did fulfill a simple fantasy: it was a real-time strategy game with original trilogy Star Wars units. If what you wanted was to fling swarms of AT-ATs against swarms of X-Wings then, yeah, you could do that. Darth Vader versus entire platoons of rebel soldiers? That too. Star Wars: Empire at War is a unique high point not only for Star Wars strategy games , but Star Wars games in general. A spiritual successor to the grand strategy classic Star Wars: Rebellion, Empire at War was the debut title of Petroglyph, a studio made up of ex-Command & Conquer devs (who recently did excellent work with the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection ). Empire at War was released in 2006, with the Forces of Corruption expansion dropping later that same year. It featured a turn-based grand strategy layer where - as either the Empire, Rebel Alliance, or the 'underworld' - you had to compete over control for planets on the galaxy map and build up your forces. Whenever the two sides met, you would then fight out either a real-time space battle or a land battle, depending on the situation. We've been served pretty well by Star Wars games over the past couple of decades. There's been ups and downs for sure, but generally speaking this is an IP that gets the right treatment more often than not. If we were to be picky, the one area that could do with some TLC is perhaps Star Wars strategy games . There hasn't been a truly decent entry for a while, but Star Wars: Empire at War can be considered one of the greats in this space. Last year, when we discovered the Star Wars Empire at War Remake mod, Fraser Brown requested to be frozen in carbonite until it was done . I guess we can thaw him out because I just checked the mod page and hot damn . Not only does this mod update the game to cutting-edge visual standards with new models and effects, it adds new units and deepens the game mechanics. The most recent release, the 3.0 update, brought a whole host of new stuff and graphical improvements to the mod. Empire at War is a strategy game released in 2006, and we still consider it to be one of the best space games on PC . I’m a particular fan of this mod because of its philosophy: It doesn’t really muck with the core game experience or add too much new material, but it does rework what it needs to and adds (optional) much-needed difficulty. - Modder Superior: Star Wars Empire At War - 8 July 2019
Every other Monday, Dominic gives you a reason to dust off one of your old games and dive into its mods with Modder Superior. I bounced off Star Wars: Empire At War when it was new, but the siren call of modding beckoned me back. Playing a bit like a 4X strategy game in fast-forward, there’s no base building and little micromanagement to be done in Empire At War. Just assemble your fleets, kick open a hole in the enemy defences, and send down troops for a bit of terrestrial tactics. Petroglyph’s hybrid RTS is still being actively supported, and the Steam version revived online multiplayer in 2017. Here’s a few mods that are strong in the Force. (more…)

Star Wars: Empire at War, one of the best space games on PC , has never looked this good before. The Empire at War Remake mod has been around for years but the latest incarnation is especially swish, as you can see from the fancy Star Destroyer battle above.  “This mod catapults Empire at War into 2018,” reads its ModDB summary. “It maintains the game's design philosophy, while adding new units, better graphics and deeper gameplay.” It’s been updated a lot this year. The mod’s creator, Jeroenimo, has big plans. They want to turn the galaxy into a “varied and alive ecosystem”. The three main factions—Rebellion, Empire and Underworld—have been reworked, while new factions like the Mandalorians and Clone War Separatists have been thrown into the mix. We described the 2006 Petroglyph RTS Star Wars: Empire at War as "a deep and beautifully-rendered take on Star Wars strategy" in our 2015 history of Star Wars on PC . More contemporaneously, we also said that it's "probably as close as we'll ever get to the grand RTS that the films deserve." So in short it's a really good game. There's only one problem: When Gamespy was shuttered in 2014, it spelled an effective end to Empire at War multiplayer, and thus a big reason to actually buy and play it.
