A new season of Delta Force is imminent, and the free-to-play shooter remains a quietly serious challenger to many of the more talked-about names. Offering both large-scale, Battlefield-style action with its Havoc Warfare mode, and an extraction format courtesy of Hazard Operations, the FPS game continues to outpace many of its rivals on Steam. This weekend alone, its peak player count matches that of Call of Duty, the standalone CoD MW2, and Battlefield 6 combined, and that's before Team Jade has dropped what it's dubbing the "biggest update of the year." I'm a big fan of PvP, and have given most of the titles on our list of the best multiplayer games a fair shake over the years. But Delta Force surprised me with its monumental rise and baffling staying power. What looks to be a fairly standard shooter is rivaling the likes of Apex Legends for concurrent player count. With 64-player modes alongside current soup du jour extraction offerings, it's got a bit of something for everyone. However, despite the huge number of players, it sits at just a 'mixed' Steam rating, with recent reviews trending downwards, 63% of which are negative. I don't see the point in cheating in a PvP game. Sure, you might unlock some rewards quicker or see yourself on the leaderboard more often, but don't you know it's not really you? That medal next to your name is not yours. You didn't earn it. What's more, you've stripped any joy out of actually playing the game. And it must be so embarrassing when you lose a match, despite having an unfair advantage over your opponents. Whether it's Insurgency or Call of Duty, Counter-Strike 2 or Rainbow Six Siege, I often have the same problem with every online FPS game. It varies depending on the lobby and the player base, and there are some games that mitigate it more than others, but generally, it's like everybody is out for themselves. These are meant to be multiplayer games - team deathmatches - but every individual is operating in isolation, and we're all working for our own kill-death ratio and XP gains. Battlefield 4's Commander mode tried to inject more direction and strategy. Likewise, the Commander role in Hell Let Loose, which, perhaps more than any online shooter, does feel like a team game. It's been far too long since I played a good campaign mode in a military FPS. Battlefield 3 and the original, 2007 Modern Warfare remain the exemplars. If you want to go further back, and we're okay with including WW2 shooters, then Medal of Honor Allied Assault has to feature, and also the first MoH game from 1999. But recently, when it comes to great single-player stories in these kinds of games, the choices are few. Thankfully, the campaign for Team Jade's Delta Force revival has just opened up in a major way. It feels like multiplayer FPS games are starting to come back down to earth. Between Gray Zone Warfare, the upcoming Wraith Ops, and what we've seen of Battlefield 6 so far, the age of wacky skins and far-out customization appears to be coming to an end. Delta Force , however, is a curious middle child. While the Black Hawk Down campaign (more on that later) and some aspects of its multiplayer are antithetical to the nauseating, bizarro palette of Black Ops 6, it still has some purple gun skins, and eccentrically designed operators.
