So it seems Basingstoke has still got the most innovative stealth mechanics around in an action game! A game where just acting sneaky has the desired effect. By way of an explanation, some people may not have realised how easy it is to be stealthy in Basingstoke and consequently not enjoyed themselves quite so much as they would have done if they'd known. So here's how it works: You don't need to ever use the Sneak key. You can run for a couple of seconds before you start to make any noise at all. The noise you are making can be seen by a little seismic pulse that emanates from your character. The bigger it goes, the wider the noise radius The longer you run, the bigger the noise you make. You can see whether you're visible by holding the cursor over your character. The radius at which you are visible is from the top to the bottom of the screen. If you can't see it, it can't see you! Basingstoke looks like an adorable game about a group of scientists in a southern English town—until a group of angry alien monsters starts ripping your lungs and stomach out (and yes, the physics engine models those organs individually when you burst into bits).  It's a roguelike, out this week, about escaping the smoking ruins of a town following an experiment gone wrong, and it wants you to use its collection of craftable weapons only as a "last resort", relying primarily on stealth and distraction. That means sticking to the shadows and chucking a mixture of bottles and poisoned kebabs at your undead enemies to keep them occupied. If you do end up in combat, which is inevitable, then you'll die in one hit, but you'll have the weapons to hold your own. Speaking as someone who comes from a place that made someone literally grimace and turn away when I named it the other day, I’m in two minds about Basingstoke ‘s running gag about running away from Basingstoke. One mind is firmly on the side of any besmirched Basestokians. The other mind reckons the freshly released stealth/action roguelike from Revenge Of The Titans devs Puppygames is only up to a bit of harmless joshing. Their version of Hampshire is one where Basingstoke has fallen to an unholy trinity of zombies, monsters and droids, and a single hit from any of them is enough to take you out. (more…)

"Basingstoke is a town in England, renowned for its charming mix of handcrafted and procedurally generated features," according to developer Puppygames. Now, I've been to the UK, and while Basingstoke is a real town located near London—a city whose twisting streets often feel procedurally generated—I'm not sure I believe the studio on this. That said, Basingstoke is also a top-down stealth roguelike set in an oddly adorable version of the town that happens to be overrun with aliens and monsters.
