  • If you can't get enough of record-breaking Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, his newest TV series is based on an '80s Sega game, and is out now - 17 September 2026

Matthew Rhys is having quite a moment. The actor cleaned up at the Emmys on Monday, making history by becoming the first man to win two Emmys for a leading role on the same night (for comedy series Widow's Bay and limited series The Beast in Me)... Read more.

  • SEGA announces they're making a new Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, and more in one trailer - 8 December 2023

SEGA has just dropped the gauntlet at The Game Awards , announcing five new games at once. These include brand new sequels to Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Het Set Radio. Wow. These all popped up as part of a sudden and frankly unexpected reveal, for franchises most thought dead or at least on the backburner. Not only that, but there are apparently even more games as part of this retro reboot collection we've not been shown yet. SEGA has been trucking away with a select few popular new titles for some time now. Persona, Yakuza, Sonic and Football Manager mostly. Although at The Game Awards they also dropped a trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio. 2024 which looks absolutely rad. So far, an absolutely banging show for the publisher. Read more

  • Sega releasing a cancelled Golden Axe prototype stirs unpleasant memories for some of its makers - 15 October 2020

Sega yesterday announced plans to celebrate their 60th birthday by giving away a number of small retro-y games, including a Streets Of Rage-style demake of Yakuza and the prototype of a cancelled Golden Axe reboot. That last one has turned out to be a big surprise for some of the people who worked on it, who do not have good things to say about their experience of trying to resurrect the side-scrolling fantasy stabber. Not quite the pleasant nostalgic jaunt Sega had hoped for, this. Update: Sega have responded with a statement saying they didn’t mean to “dredge up painful memories” or “appear disrespectful”, and have changed the Steam description. Read it in full below. (more…)

  • Sega & Chill: Meet the modder who makes arcade classics easier using his feet - 26 October 2016

Golden Axe was already an old game when I found it at the back of an arcade in the 1990s. The dusty cabinet only cost 20 cents per credit while shiny new games demanded a whole dollar. It was good value: only 20 cents to become a dwarf who could ride dragons or weird chicken-leg creatures, bash up tiny gnomes for their magic potions, and sometimes summon lightning from the sky. Even at that price I could never finish it, and playing it years later on Steam as part of the Sega Mega Drive & Classics Collection it's obvious why. The boss fights are cheap, enemies burst out of doorways to hammer you on the head, the difficulty spikes are entirely random, and ledges are precarious. It has all the hallmarks of arcade games designed first and foremost to vacuum coins straight out of childrens' pockets with maximum efficiency. But thanks to a Steam Workshop modder, it no longer has to be that w…

  • Game-o! Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe Free On Steam - 17 February 2016

This Future Is Disappointing, Part #89: look at Jet Set Radio then look outside your window. Are a colourful cast of rollerbladers grinding down rails wound around your home and spraying neat tags? Of course not. But hey, at least all and sundry can now have a bash at JSR for free, as Sega have made it free for a little while on Steam. Also going free are platformer Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit and ye olde Golden Axe. Grab ‘em now and they’re yours for keepsies! …

  • Watch Golden Axe Get Ripped to Shreds in 9:27 - 14 February 2013

Raise your hands if you spent a whoooole lot of time playing Golden Axe on your Sega Genesis. I sure did and never in my wildest dreams did I think it could be finished in under ten minutes. That's exactly what Jason 'honorableJay' Feeney does in this speedrun video hosted at Speed Demos Archive . Feeney offers up insights from his time with the classic brawler on the video's homepage. Here, he brings up my most hated part of Golden Axe : Bonus Stages The first 4 stages give you a chance to fill up on your magic/health after the completing the stage. The problem with these stages is the fact that the thief patterns are random. There is nothing I can do but pray I don't get a bad pattern. This is the only spot in the game with random elements, making them the most frustrating at times. Man, I hated those thieves! I'm saving the entire realm, assholes. You should be giving me stuff! Jerks…

  • More Sega classics outed by ratings board - 27 March 2012

Sega has been keen on releasing its classic Master System and Genesis games lately. The Monster World Collection recently leaked out, and now it appears more games are coming to the Xbox 360. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) board has rated another three titles. Siliconera reports that Super Hang-On, Golden Axe 3, and Streets of Rage 3 have recently been rated, which is a pretty certain signal that they're coming. Sega hasn't formally announced the games for Europe or here in the States. But like the ESRB, PEGI has a long and proud history of spilling the beans on upcoming game announcements. We'll probably see some word of these titles soon.

  • Retro Game Master Episode 12: Golden Axe - 15 September 2011

This week on the season finale of Retro Game Master the Kacho takes on Golden Axe. Released in 1989 by Sega for the arcade, this high fantasy side-scroller beat 'em up later made its way to a number of different consoles. In the game players take on the role of a dwarf, a barbarian or an amazon as they journey through the world on a quest to kill Death Adder. This first official U.S. airing of the show, known as Game Center CX in Japan, uses dubbing for the announcer's voice and English subtitling for Arino's. Retro Game Master airs weekly on Kotaku at 8 p.m. eastern on Thursdays. The show and Kotaku reruns will remain on the site for viewing at your leisure throughout the season. Licensing prevents the show from being seen outside of North America. Don't forget to expand the video above to watch it full screen! • This Thursday Retro Game Master Takes On Golden Axe - 13 September 2011

This season's Retro Game Master ends with a bang as the Kacho takes on... Golden Axe. Released in 1989 by Sega for the arcade, this high fantasy side-scroller beat 'em up later made its way to a number of different consoles. In the game players take on the role of a dwarf, a barbarian or an amazon as they journey through the world on a quest to kill Death Adder. The show goes live only on Kotaku at 8 p.m. eastern this Thursday, followed by more weekly episodes "airing" on Kotaku at the same time and day through September. And unlike with television, these episodes will stick around on our site so you can watch them at your own leisure. Game Center CX produced 15 seasons of gaming content in Japan, with Shinya Arino playing through dozens of Famicom, Super Famicom, PC Engine and Mega Drive games. These first U.S. airings of the episodes includes English captions for Arino and English dub…

  • Retro Game Master's Kotaku Season Finale Hits Thursday - 13 September 2011

Due to some technical difficulties we were unable to "air" the last episode of this season's Retro Game Master last week. Sorry about that. Fortunately, the show is all ready to run this Thursday. This week: Golden Axe

  • The Destructive Video Game Art of Coro Kaufman - 11 August 2011

We've got another Massive Black artist for you today, which is always a treat. Coro Kaufman is one of the studio's co-founders, and also serves as its art director. Needless to say, his stuff is great . In this gallery you'll see examples from many of the games he's worked on over the past few years, including Red Faction, Army of Two, Lost Planet 2, Silent Hill and even Golden Axe . In addition to his video game work, Kaufman has also whipped up concepts for commercials, toys, TV, movies, clothes and even album covers. He's also putting the finishing touches on a graphic novel called Transient Man , which is about a hobo who may or may not be "an inter-dimensional savior of humanity, on a mission to save the universe". You can check out the comic here , and if you like what you see, hit up the Kickstarter page and help get it printed! You can contact Luke Plunkett, the author of this p…

  • Meat Bun Dresses You In Wizards And Warriors - 1 July 2010

The sorcerers at Meat Bun have summoned forth a magical set of t-shirts for their summer 2010 line, "Wizards 'n Warriors," celebrating the 8-bit fantasy fighters and casters who made the early days of gaming so magical. The six new t-shirts in the "Wizards 'n Warriors" line continue Meat Bun's proud tradition of creating wearable art that embodies classic video games without tossing it in your face. There's something for everyone here, whether you love blood-soaked warriors, subtle ninja, tiny Viking dwarves, or eggplants. Hell, there's double eggplant love in this batch. As much as I admire the subtlety of some of the designs, it's the least subtle of the group that's caught my eye. You shall be mine, Thunderhead . Oh yes, you shall be mine. It's time to bug the living hell out of Meat Bun's own Michael McWhertor. Meat Bun Online Store

Steam marketplace comparison data

Price History Overview

USD uses SteamPulse's own locally recorded daily store snapshots, so this overview reflects the exact regional price history that SteamPulse has captured for this currency.

Coverage And Tracking Window

  • Snapshots: 1
  • Coverage: Oct 7, 2026 to Oct 7, 2026
  • Lowest observed: $0.00
  • Highest observed: $0.00

Golden Axe™'s USD price history spans from Oct 7, 2026 to Oct 7, 2026, with 1 recorded snapshot across 1 calendar day. Each row records the available final price, listed base price, and discount metadata for that observation. Within this coverage the lowest recorded price is $0.00, the highest is $0.00, and the first visible tracked price is $0.00. These comparisons apply only to the snapshots SteamPulse holds; missing observations can contain changes that are not represented here.

For USD, SteamPulse uses locally captured regional storefront snapshots and does not reconstruct older prices with exchange-rate conversion. The chart and table show the values recorded for this exact currency from the stated coverage start. Additional snapshots extend that record, but they do not fill unobserved days or prove what the storefront displayed between observations.

Discount Windows And Sale Timing

  • Discount windows: 0
  • Discounted days: 0 days
  • Deepest markdown: No discount tracked
  • Latest sale window: No sale window tracked

Golden Axe™'s tracked USD rows do not contain a discount window. This means no available snapshot in the stated coverage has usable discount metadata; it does not prove that the game was never discounted. Missing snapshots or archived rows without complete metadata can hide a sale, so SteamPulse does not infer pricing strategy from this absence.

If a later snapshot includes discount metadata, it will appear here with its recorded depth, price, date, and sale name when available. Until then, this section should be read only as a description of the available rows, not as evidence about the publisher's promotion policy.

Observed Price Changes And Stable Runs

  • Observed price drops: 0
  • Observed price rises: 0
  • Longest stable run: 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking
  • Current run: 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking

Outside rows carrying discount metadata, the tracked price has not recorded a separate price rise or drop yet. That means the observed undiscounted level has stayed stable across the snapshots SteamPulse currently holds. This is a statement about the recorded coverage only; it does not prove that an older or missing price change never happened.

The longest unchanged price stretch in the current record lasts 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking at $0.00, from Oct 7, 2026 through Oct 7, 2026. Among rows without discount metadata, the longest unchanged run lasts 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking at $0.00. The latest run records $0.00 for 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking as the same recorded undiscounted price. Run lengths describe consecutive stored observations only and do not establish that a price is permanent.

Latest Snapshot And Sales Context

  • Current price: $0.00
  • Current list price: $0.00
  • Distinct observed prices: 1
  • Source mode: SteamPulse local tracking

The latest tracked snapshot records Golden Axe™ at $0.00 in USD, with no active discount metadata. Across the available history SteamPulse has recorded 1 distinct final price in this currency. This supports comparisons with the lowest, highest, and most common values present in the retained record, subject to the stated coverage limits.

The live sales view and Steam sales record provide calendar context for these dates. A date overlap can be compared with a named Steam event, but it does not prove why a publisher changed a price. As new daily rows arrive, this overview recalculates its observed prices, discount windows, and run lengths automatically.
