  By any conventional definition, Jon Burton has lived at least three careers: first, a multi-hyphenate founder-programmer-director at Traveller's Tales, best known as the scrappy studio behind a wide variety of licensed movie-games; second, a producer and director of films, primarily in the inescapable Lego mondo-franchise; and, now, a burgeoning YouTuber with nearly a hundred-thousand subscribers to his channel, Gamehut.   Jon Burton – founder of prolific studio Traveller’s Tales and executive producer on the LEGO movie – has been working in the games industry for nearly three decades now. You pick up some interesting insights after that long, and now he’s sharing some of that knowledge with us. Over the past 6 weeks, he’s been detailing coding secrets, unveiling abandoned concepts and demoing unreleased builds of older games on his YouTube channel, GameHut . • Pre-order Sonic Generations, get other Sonic games for free - 24 October 2011

  For a complete genetic freak of a hedgehog (he’s blue!), Sonic’s not done too badly. His latest adventure - Sonic Generations - sees the speedy erinaceinae travel through time with his mates and hopefully revisit the period of history before Sonic titles became a bit poo. Pre-order the title on Steam and you’ll get Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic 3 and Knuckles chucked in, gratis. If you weren’t alive in the 1990s, 3D Blast is the uncontrollable isometric one, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles still stands up, with Knuckles as a Moriarty to Sonic’s Holmes. That’s on top of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which is an unlockable within Sonic Generations itself. That’s like meta-meta textuality. Generations runs and rolls onto Steam on 4 November for £19.99.

• SEGA to follow Nintendo's Mario model - 14 October 2010

  SEGA exec Alan Pritchard has revealed more about the company's plans to delist less-than-stellar Sonic games - suggesting the publisher may take a leaf out of an old rival's book. "We've probably been guilty of bringing too many Sonic games to market too quickly," he told Joystiq . "If you look at Nintendo as a comparison, they have been a little bit more strategic with the way they bring their Mario titles to market. If you look at 2006 to 2008, there were a number of Sonic titles coming to market on various platforms with very little time in-between." Pritchard went on to describe the Sonic titles released in the last five years as "a real mixed bag", which is a polite way of putting it. He said in the future, SEGA will aim to release only games which score 80 per cent-plus - even though those which are poorly critically received seem to sell well anyway.
