  • Major Update v1.2: Survival Mode, Field Logs & Hints - 25 August 2026

This is the biggest Backrooms Anomaly update ever. Survival Mode remixes the full game into a new camera challenge, while Classic now has nine Field Logs to uncover and a hint for every anomaly. New: Survival Mode Complete Classic on Normal or Hard to unlock Survival. Existing completions are recognized automatically. Photograph all 70 anomalies from the Hard catalogue. Captured anomalies are removed for the rest of the run. As the run escalates, a single corridor can contain two or even three anomalies at once. Clear each corridor before time expires. A timeout, three missed photographs, or being caught ends the run. Complete the full catalogue to earn a new Steam achievement. Finish the run to open Evidence Review, select your recovered photographs, and add them to your Steam Screenshot Library. They remain unpublished until you choose to upload them. Field Logs and Hints Added nine n…

  • Major Update v1.1: 20 New Anomalies - 13 August 2026

Version 1.1 expands the corridor with 20 new anomalies to discover. Added 20 new anomalies to discover in both Normal and Hard modes. Added two new Steam achievements tied to the new encounters. Added a Mouse Smoothing option. Turn it off for raw mouse input. Fixed Master Volume sometimes returning to full volume after loading or changing levels. Improved Steam achievement reliability, including retries when Steam was not ready. Fixed an invisible obstacle that could remain after an anomaly disappeared. Improved the main-menu title layout at smaller and windowed resolutions. Returning player? Everything you previously discovered remains completed. The 20 new anomalies will be added to your Undiscovered Anomalies counter automatically the next time you Continue.

  • New Game Confirmation and Performance Fixes - 27 July 2026

A few changes in this one: Added a confirmation screen before starting a new game when a Continue save is available. Improved pacing in Hard mode. Improved texture streaming on lower-memory graphics cards and when using the Low graphics preset. If you do not have an existing save, Play still takes you straight to difficulty selection.

  • Launch-day patch: Hard mode, achievements and fixes - 25 July 2026

We pushed a follow-up to the launch build, focused on Hard mode, balance and a few visual fixes. Hard mode and achievements The difficulty menu now shows the size of each anomaly pool: 30 in Normal and 50 in Hard. After reaching the good ending in Normal, the final screen now lets you start Hard mode directly. Added a new hidden achievement for correctly identifying one of Hard mode's hardest anomalies. No spoilers. Players who already completed Hard mode should receive the achievement automatically. Fixed the "all anomalies" achievement so it requires the complete 50-anomaly Hard mode catalogue. Balance and fixes Rebalanced some of the hardest anomalies in Normal mode. Fixed an item floating out of place. Fixed a shadow visual bug on Low graphics settings. That's it for this patch. If you find something odd that we didn't put there on purpose, tell us in the discussions. Thanks for pla…

  • Demo update: localization, onboarding, and more polish - 14 July 2026

We pushed another demo update. Like the last few batches, most of it comes directly from player reports: translation gaps, menu edge cases, and presentation issues on lower-end machines. A few highlights: Added missing Simplified and Traditional Chinese artwork. Filled gaps in translated UI text and cleaned up a few localization fallbacks. Added a contextual, input-aware flashlight reminder for new players. It stays out of the way if you already know the control. Fixed Escape opening the menu during startup. Fixed a short window where the player could move before the game was ready. Fixed the Warden’s shadow on lower graphics settings. Improved several audio and visual details across the demo. Made the related-games section load faster and update more reliably. Miscellaneous stability and presentation fixes. The full game is still on track for July 24. If you find something odd in the d…

  • Demo update: small patch for older machines and a language fix - 10 July 2026

A small follow-up to yesterday's batch. Three things: On low graphics settings the game skips real-time shadows to keep the framerate up, which left the warden with no shadow at all, floating over the carpet. He has one again now. Nothing fancy, but he looks like he's actually standing in the room. More performance work for weak GPUs: motion blur is off on the Low preset, and the framerate should hold steadier on machines around minimum spec. For the last few days the demo was starting in English for almost everyone, regardless of your language settings. That was a mistake in our store configuration on Steam, and Simplified Chinese players got hit hardest by it. Sorry about that. It's fixed, and the game is also smarter about it now: if Steam reports English but your system is set to a language we ship, the game follows your system language. Picking a language manually in the settings s…

  • Demo update: the second batch of polish before July 24 - 8 July 2026

Here's the second batch of the polish work we promised. Most of it is one thing: we tore out the old settings menu and built a new one from scratch. The rest is smaller fixes all over the demo. A new settings menu We rebuilt the settings menu from scratch. It's full-screen now and easier to read, especially on a Steam Deck. Controller navigation got rebuilt with it. Quitting the game now asks for confirmation. New installs start at a better default brightness. Anomalies Added visual cues to an audio anomaly. One anomaly was almost impossible to spot on low graphics settings. We made it more visible. Fixed an anomaly whose texture broke on Intel Arc graphics cards. Fixed the warden not casting a shadow near certain lights. Fixed the warden sometimes already being out of place at the start of a new run. Bug fixes to an anomaly. Lighting and graphics Rebuilt the lighting of an anomaly for…

  • Demo update: the first batch of polish before July 24 - 2 July 2026

When we moved the launch to July 24, we said we'd use the extra time for optimization and polish. The first batch of that work is live in the demo now. Here's what changed, plus a quick note on the full game. New player experience Your first two corridors are now guided. The first is always clean, the second always has an anomaly, and the wrong exit stays locked until you make the right call. Get both right and the game stops holding your hand: every corridor after that draws from the full anomaly pool. If you head for the exit on your first pass without checking the side rooms, the game now points it out. Anomalies Visual pass on one of the anomalies, now with real-time physics. New sound effect for the flickering corridor light. Controls, saves, accessibility All menus work with controller and keyboard now. Added a colorblind mode. Saves sync through Steam Cloud. Menus display correct…

  • Demo update: a new settings menu and a pile of fixes - 22 June 2026

We pushed a new version of the demo. Most of it comes straight from what people reported.Stuff players kept running into:no way to turn down the motion blur or the VHS filtermouse sensitivity was fixed, and there was no shadow option for weaker GPUsthe full-game preview card sometimes showed up as a black box when Steam was slow to load its imagethe wooden doors shut too fast to actually look arounda couple of small things that broke the mood, like a sign on the back of a door and a noticeboard calendar that gave September 31 daysWhat we changed:There's a proper settings page in the menu now. Motion blur can be off, subtle, or full, the VHS filter has an on/off toggle, you can pick a shadow quality, and you can set mouse sensitivity. It all applies right away, no restart.Added a How to Play card to the main menu so first-timers know what they're looking for.Redid the posters in the corr…

  • Huge demo update - 12 May 2026

The demo, rebuilt. A few of you hit the same handful of problems with the old demo: a separate launcher window that opened a new copy of the game every time you clicked Play;"Could not find the Webview2 runtime" on Steam Deck and Linux; runs where no anomalies spawned at all; crashes on lower-VRAM laptops. So we rebuilt it. The launcher is gone, the menu is in the game now. The anomaly RNG was rewritten. Virtual shadow maps and ray tracing are off by default for stability on smaller GPUs. Play the new demo: Backrooms Anomaly releases this June! If you want to be notified on launch, wishlist the full game here.
