- Games industry revenue "will pass $200 billion" in 2022 - 6 May 2022
How big is the games industry? Bigger than ever, according to games market analytics expert Newzoo , which reports that games industry revenue continues to grow through 2022 and is set to reach a record $203.1 billion USD generated via consumer spending by the end of the year. That number is up from an estimated $192.7 billion generated in 2021. Newzoo says that global player numbers are also on course for a record, with an expected total of 3.09 billion people playing games by the end of this year. This year will be the first time that games market revenue has passed the $200 billion mark. The total value is a little lower than the $230 billion originally predicted by Digi-Capital's 2018 games industry revenue forecast , but, given the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years, this record level of growth will still be very positive news for industry figures. The Reddit-led squeeze on GameStop's stock prices has had Wall Street sweating for about a week, and there's already a film on the situation in development. Multiple films, in fact. Reports suggest that both Netflix and MGM are developing movies based on the short squeeze. Whether either of these movies will come out before we either forget about the GameStop talk or begin to endure a total financial apocalypse remains to be seen. MGM has picked up the rights to a book proposal called The Antisocial Network from author Ben Mezrich, as Deadline reports. Three years ago, I was consumed by – I don’t say this lightly – an addiction to AdVenture Capitalist , one of those clicker aka idle games that briefly ate all our minds. After a few months watching static backdrops generate pretend money when I should have been earning real money, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and ejected in self-disgust. I figured the same, eventually, would have been true of anyone who let this outwardly jaunty poison into their veins, and that AdVenture Capitalist’s 2015 boom would have long ago turned to bust.
