Let’s take a closer look at how our frosty game has been progressing during the last few months.First closed playtestLast week marked the end of the first closed playtest for Frostrail. It was extremely reassuring to see the excitement towards our game, and over 100,000 applications from eager playtesters! Unfortunately we couldn't grant access to everyone, but trust that your interest warmed our hearts like the Eden Engine! More playtests with a larger number of players are planned for later down the line. We learned a lot from the playtest. A number of bug reports came in from players exploring the frozen wasteland, ranging from smaller issues to more significant problems that helped us identify areas needing extra attention. Dozens of th…

The playtest will run from April 16th to April 27th and will focus on collecting feedback on the early game loop and Frostrail’s Fun Factor (or FFF for the real ones). - New Frostrail video delivers more survival train horror shooting plus weird underground Tomb Raider temples - 27 February 2026
I’ve felt surprisingly mixed so far about Frostrail , the new first-person co-op horror survival game from the folks behind Barotrauma . As a rule, I’m keen on stories about awful apocalypse trains – see Metro Exodus , RailGods, and recent Julian favourite Fogpiercer – but Frostrail has hitherto seemed a bit generic. Certainly, a bit generic for a game from the people who made a game that inspired write-ups like this one . Read more

- Winter Development Update - 8 December 2025
Hello everyone! While we have been quiet on this front, behind the scenes the wheels of development are constantly turning, and we wanted to share some greetings and a progress update on Frostrail’s development with you before the year is out. This year has been action-packed for our studio. We’ve revisited pretty much every corner of the game: redrawing and improving huge chunks of art assets, expanding our lore and documentation, laying the foundations for campaign progression, and homing in on the desired feel of close-range combat. We’ve also welcomed new people to the team! The game has come a long way since last spring’s announcement and trailer, and we are now at a place where all the different pieces are coming to their own and falling into place together. It’s an exciting time for us, seeing an idea become concrete after such a long time in development. And as the game is now pr…
- Summer Update & Gamescom - 12 August 2025
Hello everyone! We have just returned to our desks from our summer holidays, and work continues on our less than summery game. Since our reveal in the spring, a lot of things have fallen into place with Frostrail, and we are eager to show you more of them a little later. Over the past months, the combat gameplay in particular has improved by leaps and bounds. We’ve spent a lot of time honing the feel of combat, adjusting animations, sounds and enemy mechanics to find the perfect mix of fantasy and realism. The Revenants are really angry now! We’ll write more about these enemies soon.Another part of the game that has received a lot of attention recently are the visuals. Our art team has been hard at work creating a whole bunch of new assets like buildings, trees and everyday items. This has really improved the overall style and all the small details, and helped us home in on the atmospher…

- Meet the team behind Frostrail - 17 April 2025
Hello everyone! We’ve been thrilled to see so much interest in Frostrail since last week’s announcement. Thank you for all the questions and comments, and keep them coming – we’re looking forward to hearing what you think, and will be writing to answer as many questions as we can in the coming weeks and months. This week we wanted to help you get to know us a little better: You may have heard of FakeFish before, but what kind of people are there behind the name? Those who have been following us for a longer time through Barotrauma already know something about our team, but there are developers behind Frostrail who have not worked on Barotrauma, and vice versa. So we believe some introductions are in order. FakeFish, the makers of Frostrail and Barotrauma A picture from a few years back with almost half of the current team. FakeFish is an independent game studio from Turku, Finland. Our…
- Welcome to Frostrail, a journey through the cold - 10 April 2025
Greetings wayfarer, and welcome on board. You’ve just taken your first step on the journey called Frostrail, and we’re thrilled to have you with us! Let’s talk a little bit about this game that we at FakeFish and Shiro Games have been working on for a couple of years already, behind the scenes. Frostrail is the upcoming second game of FakeFish, the Finnish game studio behind the submarine simulator Barotrauma. Frostrail is an entirely new survival horror adventure through the cold and dark – not an alien ocean, but a post-apocalyptic world of ice and eldritch enemies. The second half of the team behind Frostrail is the French publisher Shiro Unlimited, the third party publishing arm of Shiro Games, known for the multi-million-selling RTS Northgard, the critically acclaimed turn-based RPG Wartales, and the recently announced online space exploration and building game SpaceCraft. For our…
