It turns out that naming Final Fantasy X's sequel was a bigger headache than you might think. In a blog post for PlayStation , Final Fantasy X-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase recalls that Square Enix initially rejected the name as players might have mistaken it for Final Fantasy XII. "It may sound odd, but one of the biggest challenges we faced when making Final Fantasy X-2 was what to call it," he says. "Having a sequel to a mainline game was unheard of, and when we suggested 'X-2' the company was initially worried that it would be mistaken for Final Fantasy XII and turned it down. Since then, they've grown fond of it of course." Kitase goes on to say that FFX-2 proved more divisive than other Final Fantasy games partly because of its more "bright and poppy direction", which gives it a very different vibe to other entries in the series. - Final Fantasy X's Tidus could have been a plumber - 3 August 2021
You all remember Tidus - the Final Fantasy X protagonist, Blitzball player, and star of that awkward laughing meme you've probably seen here and there on the internet. Well, it turns out he wasn't always the sports athlete you know and love and was originally going to be a plumber. Final Fantasy X's producer Yoshinori Kitase, scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, character designer Tetsuya Nomura, and event director Motomu Toriyama spoke to Famitsu to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary (thanks, Kotaku ), delving into some of the original plans for Tidus. "To get the character in the water, for the initial plan, there was a time in which Tidus was to be an underwater plumber," Nojima explains. It looks like there's a wee chance we're not done with Tidus and Yuna just yet. Tongues have been sent wagging today after quotes from Final Fantasy X character designer Tetsuya Nomura, event director Motomu Toriyama, and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima surfaced online on Ryokutya2089 from a recent interview with Weekly Famitsu . The magazine's new issue features a 30-page feature on the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, and the trio of Square Enix veterans all took part. While the piece is mainly nostalgic, the conversation does turn to the future and the possibility of another entry in the Final Fantasy X series. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time… I am not ashamed to admit that it was Final Fantasy X-2 , not Final Fantasy X , that made me want to get a PlayStation 2. So fervent was my desire for this game that I even entered a text competition on the telly to try and win one. Needless to say, I was not successful. Still, it was just what I needed to push me over the edge. I was vaguely aware of FFX and Yuna and Tidus and all of that back in the early noughties, but man alive, Yuna just looked so damn cool in X-2 with her guns and new short hair/mad pony-tail combo, and I was also precisely the right age for Paine to seem like a total badass. It was the perfect storm of all my teenage passions, and I still look back on it fondly even though we all know it’s a total trash fire and innately inferior to X proper. (mo…

Xbox Game Pass really is the gift that keeps on giving. Tonight at X019, Microsoft has announced more than 50 new titles headed to the service in the coming months. Forget any announcements ahead of E3 - the biggest news of the week is soundtracks to pretty much every Final Fantasy game are on Spotify and Apple Music. The collection is pretty comprehensive - there's every mainline Final Fantasy game, several PLUS albums (bonus or unreleased tracks for games like 9, 11, 13 and 13-2), expansions for MMOs 11 and 14 and a variety of spin-offs, from Crisis Core to Tactics and more recent efforts such as Dissidia, Brave Exvius and World of Final Fantasy. - Legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu ceases work due to illness - 20 September 2018
Legendary video game composer Nobuo Uematsu has announced he can no longer continue with his current projects due to ill health. Writing in a post on his blog today, Uematsu declined to state the nature of his condition, except to say it had affected him now for a couple of years. Placing his career on hold indefinitely, Uematsu wrote that his return to work would be depend on his recovery. He did not want to continue working while ill and produce subpar music not up to his usual standard. Read more…
