Latest Steam announcements

  • Status Update: You Can (Not) Rename - 8 July 2026

Maybe you've noticed, maybe you're just noticing now, but the game has been renamed to Metropolis Gear: Tactical City-Building Action (from Metrogear: Tactical City-Building Action). The title was meant to be an homage to a certain tactical espionage action game, but honestly, it was a bit Too close. I noticed I was actively avoiding saying the title out loud because of how much I'd have to enunciate Metro to make sure it didn't sound too much like Metal. Last month I got fed up with how silly that was becoming, so we're Metropolis Gear now. You might've also noticed the gif above! Since the last update, I've added an explosion effect, an overlay to represent attack AOEs, in-world damage numbers, and the ability for upper floors to fall down when levels under them are blown up (some call this effect "Gravity"). Next update should have even more combat features! Follow me on bsky / twitt…

  • Status Update: The First Impact (Animation) - 6 April 2026

So! It turns out that Z-axis animation from an isometric perspective using 2D graphics is a deep, dark abyss of unknowable evil maths. Maths that were sealed away many millennia ago by the hands of 3D graphics. I tried searching for these heinous maths, I got so close that I could almost smell them, but they still eluded my nostrils. Until I buckled down and upgraded to Godot 4 (from Godot 3), now Z-axis animation is dirt easy. It took a long time to get the engine upgraded, but the new sprite sorting features let me almost instantly resolve the issues I'd been having for months. Now that the game compiles again, I'll (hopefully) be able to make more regular progress on development. Follow me on bsky / twitter for more regular devlogs as well! Here's some of the new stuff in action:
