Control Resonant , much like the inside-out, interdimensional cryptids it has you bashing with a shapeshifting stick, probably shouldn’t exist. At least not in the risk-averse, pennypinching reality that sometimes seems to have enveloped the art of gamesmaking, and that may have installed some scepticism into my own head . The sequel to a liked yet slow-selling shooter, which replaces both the original’s player character and its instantly recognisable, bureauca-brutalist setting, while violently pirouetting into open-world RPG melee brawling. I’ve replayed CONTROL more times than I can count. Something about the Oldest House and Jesse’s journey through looking for her brother and battling the hiss really hits. It doesn’t hurt that the combat and traversal mechanics in it are awesome, not to mention the Ashtray Maze alone being this amazing standout moment where all the elements of the game come together in this amazing, musically charged set piece. So when CONTROL Resonant was set to come out, I was really excited to see how they would expand upon what I consider to be one of the best games of its generation, and what a supercharged X-Files game would be like.
