I’m not sure if it was a consequence of the redesign or simply a result of restlessness on my part, but last weekend I found myself doing something I rarely do – scrolling through the list of games Steam ‘thought’ I might enjoy. Three of the Learning Machine’s suggestions did indeed float my LCT, in fact they floated it to such an extent that I’ve decided to make the trio the subject of today’s column. None of the titles described below are traditional wargames or sims – none are exactly daisy fresh – but if you like your interactive entertainment historical, military, tactical and/or novel, I’d be surprised if you managed to gambol through all 24 paragraphs without feeling a single twinge of temptation. The Suckley update focuses on improving visibility for achievement progress, introduces the ability to swap between vehicle skins, and brings with it bug fixes and some other minor improvements to the overall package. - Dark Future is Carmageddon gone strategic - 19 May 2019
Games Workshop used to publish plenty of games beyond their Warhammer brands back in the day, including board games like Talisman and Fury of Dracula. Dark Future was another, a game of car combat set in an alternate timeline where much of the USA becomes a desert called the Big Empty and road warriors in "gangcults" roam the highways. Auroch Digital have adapted it into Dark Future: Blood Red States, an unusual meld of racing game, strategy, and Carmaggedon. You control a car covered in guns from an exterior view, switching between it and a sidekick vehicle if you've hired one, either giving commands in real-time or dropping into a slow-motion command mode as much as you want. It turns white line fever into something thinky, so that when things get hectic you can take a moment—not forever, it's slow-mo rather than a pause button—to plan something clever.  Y…

Another day, another Games Workshop board game adapted to PC, but Dark Future: Blood Red States is a bit different from the Warhammer norm. Based on the 1988 (and obviously Mad Max-inspired) Dark Future for tabletop, it’s a tactical real-time car combat RPG. Rather than driving your vehicle directly, you’re effectively juggling its weapons systems, picking lanes and speeds and prioritising targets in slow-motion while the car itself handles navigation.
