- For once, I'm happy to see expensive corporate lawyers forcing a fan project offline - 2 October 2026
I don't typically have much love for billion-dollar corporations dropping the 'meet our legal department' hammer on no-budget modders who are just trying to exercise their creative muscles, but in this one instance I'm willing to let it slide: Bethesda has issued a cease-and-desist order to an "AI creator" who made a Fallout game set in New York City that runs in browsers...
- We're probably not getting a new Fallout game until well into the 2030s, but that's no reason to stop talking about them - 1 October 2026
That last mainline entry in the Fallout series, Fallout 4, was released in 2015. Fallout 5? That's most likely still half a decade away, if not more: Bethesda first needs to finish and release The Elder Scrolls 6, which is itself mostly likely still a few years away... Read more.
- Bethesda says that Obsidian's 'creative identity' will be preserved, just months after multiple projects were cancelled and it was told to make a Fallout game - 24 September 2026
Listen, you can say what you want about Avowed—I wouldn't even blame you if you didn't like it, or much of what has come out of Obsidian's recent catalogue. There's even a tiny, selfish scrap of my gamer heart that's secretly very glad that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game, again ... Read more.
- Fallout dev Tim Cain says the games industry's volatility is 'always gonna be around': 'What's happening now isn't novel, it isn't new' - 13 September 2026
I don't know if you've noticed, but the games industry kind of sucks . Despite (and because of) the absurd amount of money games rake in, there's an ungodly degree of consolidation , the RAMpocalypse , and constant, huge waves of layoffs . Tim Cain, who co-created the original Fallout, uploaded a video to YouTube last Wednesday explaining why he thinks the current state of affairs is so terrible, if not terribly surprising... - Microsoft is looking to speed up development of future Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo games - 12 June 2026
The resuscitation of Xbox has begun in earnest, but there's still much to be done, and still great uncertainty: Console exclusives are back but to what extent remains unclear, and of course the "reset" for a better future will almost certainly mean putting hundreds of people out of work . And it's possible that even bigger things could happen: A new report from The Information (via Reuters ) says Microsoft is looking to shift its focus and resources to its biggest games, while simultaneously mulling the possibility of cutting the division loose entirely... - Fallout's creator reveals you could have played as a snoring cow hater who believes in UFOs, had Black Isle stuck with its original licensed roleplaying system - 16 May 2026
The character system used in Fallout is famously based upon its roleplaying system called SPECIAL. But this wasn't always the case. In fact, for most of the original game's development, Fallout's mechanics were based upon a licensed, table-top roleplaying system called GURPS, which, yes, sounds more like a digestive tract disorder than a TTRPG ruleset... The cross I bear—probably the heaviest burden borne by a human being in history—is that I'm doomed to annoy basically all the loudest segments of the Fallout fan community. Do I love the direction Bethesda took the series in with FO3 and FO4? Not really. Do I think the studio—and especially FO3 and 4 director Todd Howard—harbours a secret hatred in his heart for the games Bethesda didn't make , or that he's some Johnny-come-lately who probably doesn't even like Fallout 1 and 2? Also no... Read more.
