- Devlog 006 - Mountains - 27 October 2025
Hi allSince the last quick update I've turned things around. Rather than working with full models for the mountains, I decided to take another approach. While the mountain itself only comes after the second part of the Silent Forest, I've had to make part of it already for that part, since I want a bit of continuity in the game, and not just a 'woop, here I am!' kind of vibe. It is taking 'a lot' of my time, and patience, but at least it's not wasted work since I can easily reuse what I'm making now in the actual Mountain part.To recap last week's update, and to give a better view of the change, here's last week's photos:As you can see the whole thing looks a bit bland and too much of the same. I know, last week I said it looked good, but the more I stared at it while making it, the more I felt I could do better, and that brings us to the following screenshots:What you're seeing here is…
- Unity Fixes - 19 October 2025
Hi all! Here I am with a quick round of bugfixes. With the upgrade from Unity 6 to 6.2, there were some quirks with the start menu — sometimes it would appear when it shouldn’t. That’s now been fixed! I also went through other parts of the new version and made the necessary adjustments.Beyond these bugfixes, I’ve spent a bit more time building the new area of the Silent Forest. The trickiest part so far has been adding the mountain for the next section. While I’m still in the process of adding more models to make it feel fully like a mountain, I think it’s already shaping up nicely.Even though it’s been a bit quiet on updates the past month, work on the game has not stopped. The newborn is starting to settle into a routine, my wife has been doing an amazing job recovering, and that’s finally giving me more time to dive back into development.Hopefully next week I’ll have a full devlog rea…
- Unity Platform Protection - 3 October 2025
Hi all!In between diapers and bottles, I got an important email from Unity about a security issue in the version I was using. I made time to update both Unity Hub and the Editor, and followed the steps needed to get everything running again.Unity shared a few key points:There’s no evidence this vulnerability has been exploited, nor any impact on users or customers.Platform partners worked with Unity to secure things further.Released games made with Unity 2017.1 or later (Windows, Android, MacOS, Linux) may contain the vulnerability.Unity has patched all major/minor versions from 2019.1 onwards. They’ve also released a binary patcher for older builds dating back to 2017.1.Since Unity recommended immediate action, that’s exactly what I did. I’ve tested the game on the updated Editor, and the build seems fine so far. I did notice a few small things that feel a bit off, and I’ll be checking…
- Devlog 005 - Silent Forest Part 1 Release - 7 September 2025
Well, well, well,It’s Sunday again, which means… a new devlog! This time, we’ll take a look at some of the new things added along with the Silent Forest — which also went live today. Well, part of it anyway. The first part.I ended up making the Silent Forest bigger than planned, so load times for this section are a little longer than I first thought. Right now, it’s around 37–38 seconds. Not too surprising though, since the level is packing almost 68,300 objects. It’s still a fair trade-off if you ask me — once you’re in, performance is smooth, and the forest feels as massive as it looks.Don’t worry: lots of objects doesn’t mean lower FPS.What’s New?Sequence Buttons / GateAs I mentioned in the last post, I’ve been working on a new mechanic: sequence buttons. They’re like regular buttons, except you need to press multiple in the correct order to open a gate. Mess up the order? They reset,…
- Little Reminder - 4 September 2025
Hi all! This is your reminder that your chance to get Boll's Journey at a 30% discount is almost running to an end. To give you a bit more incentive to buy the game now, below you can find some of the (near) future updates.More puzzlesFirst of all, there'll be more puzzle types in the game. Adding to the current button and gate mechanic, I've dreamt up a little variation of the existing one: hit buttons in a specific order to open a gate, if you happen to hit the wrong button, the buttons get reset and you'll have to start over. This one will be added as early as the Silent Forest scene, which was supposed to come out early this week but has since been moved to end of week due to me dreaming up this new puzzle ːsteamhappyːSecondly, I'll be adding something with lasers in the near future. I've been playing with several different ways to do these lasers:One where you have to make sure that…
- Devlog 004 - 31 August 2025
Hi all! It's now been a week since the release into Early Access, and with that a personal milestone has been reached. In the past few weeks I've been able to lay out a few parts of the game, some in more detail than others, but one thing I haven't yet talked about, which are also important to Boll's Journey, is the puzzle elements in the game. This Devlog will change that.First, however, something about the...Story...something I already briefly talked about, but haven't said much of yet, until now. My hope is that you, the players, will have played the game already before reading this Devlog. But in case you haven't yet: this Devlog will contain spoilers! The story so far has Boll waking up at a rift, and being immediately greeted by the Guiding voice. After being guided through the first bit of the Serene Gardens, you end up having to cross the road until the voice will come with a fina…
- v0.0.3. - 27 August 2025
Hey everyone!I was planning on only doing an update weekly or two-weekly, but the buzz of releasing the game gave me a bit more energy than I expected, and I was able to work on it a bit more than I originally planned.Early Access doesn’t mean the game’s done — far from it. Most of the current mechanics are in place, but there are a lot more scenes (and maybe new mechanics along the way) that I can’t wait to build.Since launch, a few bugs have popped up and they’re now patched. I also added a changelog to the main menu so you can see updates right in the game. Here’s what’s changed:Closed up openings that shouldn’t have been accessibleAdded missing collisions to collectiblesFixed Shape’s moves in several spotsIncreased transparency on treesAdded a changelog tab to the main menuAll of this is live on Steam now.I’ve also started early work on the fourth scene, Silent Forest — too early to…
- Early Access! - 24 August 2025
Hi everyone!I’m pleased to announce that Boll’s Journey is ready for Early Access! The game currently features 3 scenes…:Serene GardensDesolate ExurbsAbandoned HighwayI feel confident about the current state of the game and am ready to release it in Early Access. The next few scenes (Silent Forest and Majestic Mountain) are in the pipeline and will likely be released in the coming weeks, with the Silent Forest being the first one. If everything goes according to plan, I should be able to then drop major updates (new scenes) at least once a month, although I hope to be able to drop updates every 2 weeks. Some notes when it comes to this Early Access release:Sounds are currently non-existent, I spent most time building the world and the story for now. Some mechanics may still be subject to change, depending on player feedback. For me personally, it is playable, it is working, it is annoying…
- Early Access Release - 21 August 2025
Hey all!I've come to a point where I have to make a choice: continue refining things so that they work for me, or put Boll's Journey out there to get feedback from you. After some thought, some back and forth, some left and right, I've decided to go for the latter... In a few days. That's right: Boll's Journey will go into Early Access somewhere in the coming days. I've already teased about an update in the previous devlogs, and I feel confident enough where the game is now to put it out into the wild.I'll still be taking the coming days to put some finishing touches on the last part of the Highway Scene, a death screen and one final playthrough up until the last bit of the Highway scene.I've done what I can to take out bugs, lags and weirdnesses, so I'm confident that it is a solid first Early Access version.Spread the word, wishlist if you haven't already, and stay tuned for an August 2…
- Devlog 003 - 17 August 2025
Hi allAnother week, another devlog. This time with a closer look at enemies, scenes and powerups. Last week there was a halfway promise on an Early Access release date somewhere in the past week, but as you may have noticed it wasn't there. This week, however, it'll be there. You can expect an update in the Wednesday/Thursday timeframe! Now, let's head into the content...PowerupsA game like Boll's Journey wouldn't be complete without some Powerups. It's one of the first things you'll come across, next to the Shapes. There currently are five Powerups in the game:Attack The Attack Powerup lets you do more damage to a Shape when shooting at it. This translates to skipping one or more colors.Attack Rate The Attack Rate Powerup lets you shoot faster. Defense The Defense Powerup lets you keep your moves when shooting at Shapes. This is not to be confused with the next PowerupShot Defense The S…
- Devlog 002 - 10 August 2025
Hi everyone! It's that time of the week again, and as promised last week, we'll be looking deeper into the story elements, collectibles and Duds. If there are any other things you want to know more about, let me know in the comments!First...Before we'll look into the three promised topics, I figured it's a good time to talk about the current state of the game. The game, as mentioned last week, has three scenes ready to play. There are some finishing touches being implemented in terms of timing, collectibles and powerups. These are required to make the gameplay as clean as possible, and as tight as possible. While Boll's Journey is mostly a casual top-down game, it doesn't mean that it can't have some action, strategy and timing in it.The expectation is to be done with the finishing touches somewhere next week, meaning the game will be ready for Early Access somewhere in the coming weeks. I…
- Devlog 001 - Boll's Journey - 3 August 2025
Hi everyone! Here's a first update on the development of Boll's Journey.Since this is a new game, i felt it important to give out as much information on how to play the game, as well as screenshots of the various scenes. This should give new players a solid view of the look and feel of the game.GameplayThe gameplay can be pretty much mentioned in one sentence: It is a point-and-click game. However, it doesn't mean that the game is that easy. There's a lot of different features when it comes to Boll's Journey, which we'll be looking at in this and coming devlogs.ShapesThe main enemy in the game are the Shapes. They come in all sorts of colors and shapes. The combination of colors and shape show their strength. There are currently 9 colors, and 9 shapes. -- The 9 colors: Green, Orange, Red, Yellow, Purple, Pink, Blue, Cyan and Black. Each of the Shapes have been divided into 3 groups:EasyM…
