• Version 1.09: Henry leg lore consistency fix - 15 October 2026

  Henry now sometimes use a wheelchair. It turns out the reason no-one commented on it was that the code to change his appearance broke at some point in development. Apologies for the mistake and any confusion!

  I've added a little moment during Henry's introduction where he mentions having chronic pain in his legs. I had previously left his occasional wheelchair use unexplained, for reasons which made sense to me at the time. But today I was thinking about it and decided I should add an explanation. Some rambling about my writing process, for anyone who's curious:When I first started development of the first version of Northanger Abbey over eight years ago, I aimed as much as possible for non-canon scenes to only show up as the result of player choice. My goal was that you could play something very similar to the original story if you wanted, but also had the option to see other ways things could have played out, or explore hidden parts of the story. • Gender choices now more clear and less buggy - 4 October 2026

  After some feedback, we rejigged the initial gender choices to make them clearer, and added the ability to check and adjust the player character's gender, trans status, and presentation before continuing with the game. We also fixed some bugs where gender related variables weren't having the intended effect. Apologies to anyone who was confused or frustrated, and thanks to everyone who's left feedback. Positive or negative, it's all very helpful!

• Northanger Abbey is out on Steam!! - 18 September 2026

  Northanger Abbey isn't one of Jane Austen's better known novels. But it's a story about stories, and about choices, and it has a number of female characters who gave me some very confused feelings about wanting a different ending when I was reading the book for the first time as a repressed teen. Once I started thinking about making a queer interactive version it all came together pretty naturally, and I had a lot of fun playing around with Austen's prose, queering her characters, and taking credit for her jokes. The first demo of Northanger Abbey was released on itch in 2017, and the first full version in 2019. But I was never entirely happy with it: the sprites were amateurish, and the side-routes stopped abruptly.
