- The most historically accurate PC games - 17 August 2017
PC games are full of arcane artifacts spurring on ancient civilizations, Nazis riding dinosaurs, and Ghandi nuking the entire planet. Historical accuracy isn’t always a priority, and even the ones that try to get it right have to take some liberties with the facts modern scholarship hands down to us to be, you know, a fun game. But there is a definite divide between games that offer a mere nod to history (or use some vague, pop culture-informed stereotype of it as a jumping-off point) and those that actually put in enough research time to get at least some of the important facts straight. It’s hard to measure a variable like “historicity” when it comes to games—and yes, that is a real word. Games that put history first tend to wind up overly complicated rather than fun, so I've highlighted genuinely great PC games that go out of their way to inclu…
- Why aren't there more great pirate games? - 1 August 2016
Everybody who likes pirates (and who doesn't like pirates?) has a pitch for the ideal game about them. We carry our imaginary game around with us, close to our rum-soaked hearts. It's got to be open world of course, because what's the point of the horizon if you can't have it brought to you? The romance of being a pirate is all about freedom. It's also about stabbing people. There needs to be good stabbing, and pistol-shooting as well, and belting out a good har har! while you do it. You want swinging onto someone else's deck and swashbuckling away to be joyous. Blasting enemies from a distance with cannon fire is Pirating 101. Duelling with swords and also with sails, some kind of system for using the wind against opponents and lining up broadsides, more tactical than the wild to-and-fro of close combat. Oh, and we'll also need a robust economic simulation, please. What's the point of…

It's Sid Meier's PC Gamer Show! In this special extended episode, the legendary strategy designer stops by to talk about the history of the Civilization series, what's up with his new game Starships, modding, the future of strategy in VR, and what it takes for a game to earn the "Sid Meier's" title. Gosh, he sure is nice. As usual, we answer your questions at the end of the episode. To ask us a question for next week's show, tweet @pcgamer with the hashtag #AskPCGamer.
- Why Sid Meier's name is on his games - 26 June 2013
Sid Meier's name is well known in gaming circles for the addicting "just one more turn" mentality associated with his strategy games. Of course, there is never any mistaking what his games are because his name is usually in the game's title. It can't be because of ego, as colleagues say Meier is a very soft-spoken, unassuming man. "In the years and all the people I've worked with at Firaxis," said designer Jake Solomon, "there has never been anyone who's had a personality issue with Sid, 'cause it's not possible. He's such a wonderful person." So just how did it happen that the brilliant strategy designer's games get that title treatment? It started in Meier's days at MicroProse with partner Bill Stealey, as Meier was pitching the idea for a pirate game. "Bill said, 'When's my next flight simulator coming out?' And I said, 'I'm not doing a flight simulator; I'm doing a pirates game,'" M…

- Sid Meier's Pirates for Wii Boards Retail Vessels Oct. 5 - 25 August 2010
Ahoy, land-lovers! 2K Games has dated the Wii port of Sid Meier's classic trek at sea and we're slightly disappointed. Don't get us wrong, we're happy that Sid Meier's Pirates! will launch on the Nintendo Wii on October 5. What we're disappointed by is the synergy that could have come with setting the game to sail on September 19, the internationally recognized day to " talk like a pirate ." For those of you looking for reasons to revisit the treacherous seas on the Wii, 2K China's port includes "traditional" mini-games from the "original" title along with a handful of new bonuses , including two Wii-exclusive mini-games: Lockpicking and Bombardment. - Sid Meier’s Pirates! Sets Sail For The Wii - 4 May 2010
Nintendo can't seem to escape the reach of piracy, especially now that one of game industry legend and this week's Kotaku Talk Radio guest Sid Meier's most beloved games is making its way to the Wii this fall. Sid Meier's Pirates! first hit the stormy seas of PC gaming back in 1987, when it won several game of the year awards and captured the hearts of countless pirates, both imaginary and computer-related. In 2004, Firaxis released an updated version for PCs and consoles that did quite well for itself. Now it's the Nintendo Wii's turn, with 2K China handling development duties on the point and waggle version of the classic game. Players will participate in ship combat, fencing, and a fair bit of wooing as they struggle to save their family from the evil Marquis de la Montalban in the 17th century Caribbean. Wii players will be treated to two platform-exclusive mini-games as well, Bomba…
