- Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 6 - Law & Order ⚖️ - 25 May 2026
This update brings police, bounty hunters, smuggling and a conversation dialog system. It's another big update to Loadstar.Legal statusAll ships in the Loadstar universe now have a legal status with each of the factions in the game. Each crime will be recorded in your criminal record and carries a punishment, either a fine or custodial sentence depending what you did. This means if you commit a crime in the Empire you're in trouble, unless you leave imperial space, that is. You can be wanted for piracy, smuggling, trading illegal goods, resisting arrest, bribery and the classic illegal dumping, can you catch them all?A long criminal recordThis is the policeOf course that doesn't mean much unless you can get caught so there are now police ships. These will be launched to intercept you if commit a serious crime, and there are now also police patrols which might just stumble into you and r…
- Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 5 - Traffic ⛗ - 3 April 2026
This one is a biggie, I didn't realise how much I had done until I came to write this devlog. During the past couple of months I've focused on adding NPC traffic to the galaxy and improving the combat AI. Sounds quite well bounded but it had a way of reframing all my past work and pushing me to rethink a few things to make sure all the game systems are joined up and working together. You are not aloneUp until now yours would be the only ship on the solar system map. Fights would be randomly triggered as you travelled through space similar to travel the world map in Final Fantasy. I wanted to change that to make you feel like you are just one ship in a galaxy filled with commerce and crime.Loadstar now generates NPC traffic, each ship has a purpose, a route it is travelling and a destination to reach or a home base to return to. These ships are either freighters or pirates, though I inte…
- Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 4 - Hyperspace & the Galaxy - 23 January 2026
Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 4 - Hyperspace & the Galaxy 🌌As I approach the one year mark in development of Loadstar, I have completed alpha 4 which is focussed on hyperspace and the galaxy. This is a big milestone for me and something I have been looking forward to building since starting this project. Also is this the only galaxy emoticon? 🌌 pretty disappointing...Generating a fake "real" galaxyBefore I could get hyperspace working, we need somewhere to hyperspace to. I have a lot of fond memories of exploring the milky way in Elite 2 and it was really important to me that Loadstar be set in a realistic(ish) milky way galaxy. I decided to find use real star types and positions and then randomly generate the planets inside these systems. We're in the age of exoplanet discovery but of course we don't yet have the complete picture for any extrasolar star systems so I decided to leave known…
- Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 3 - Crew - 15 November 2025
Annoucing the official Loadstar Discord server - discord.gg/bGPab7CXxpThe focus for alpha 3 was crew RoomsBefore I could add crew, I wanted the interior of the ship to be made up of individual rooms with doors rather than a grid of individual parts. This means the game has to be smart enough to group similar parts together into a single room and surround it with walls. It also ensures that there are enough doors so that the crew can reach every point on the ship, and adds a console to each room that needs one so that the crew can operate it. Automatically adjusting the layout as parts are added HelmThe existing ship layouts gave me a problem because some classes of ship had several separate islands of part slots - no good for the crew to walk between unless they want to do a space walk! I also realised that there wasn't a bridge, a room where the captain can boldly go. I solved both at…
- Loadstar Devlog - Alpha 2 - Combat - 15 October 2025
Welcome to the first Loadstar Devlog!I plan to publish a devlog with the completion of each alpha version tracking my progress towards the finished game and the features I'm adding along the way.`Alpha 1` marked what I considered to be the minimum viable trailer version of the game. Everything I needed to put together an initial gameplay trailer and launch the Steam page, no more, no less. Following on from this, I plan to focus on a specific area or 'epic' in each successive alpha version. The focus for `alpha 2` was combatInteriorsOne of the first things I wanted to take a look at was how the insides of the ships are drawn. In `alpha 1` I used sprites showing all the parts inside the ship. This looked cool but made it hard to see what was inside the ship vs. what was outside. In `alpha 2` the parts are represented by icons. The icon colour shows the damage level, the borders of the cel…
