• Updated Controls - 13 March 2026

  While the game has always supported keyboard controls, we've edited the tutorial to explain the game from a keyboard perspective since some users have found just using the mouse to be less intuitive. Use \ and \ to move Granny left and right. Tap \ to swap the trays directly above Granny; holding \ drops ingredients or increases their drop speed. The drum can be used by hitting \. Controller is also supported for these actions. You will still need to use the mouse (or touchscreen) for the rolling pin, scrolls, incense, and interacting with the bakeshop.There's a new button in the shop's computer that lets you review the controls at any time. You can also use the "Tech Support Granny" button to replay the tutorial!

• Secrets of the Bakery - 6 February 2026

  If you couldn't tell from our previous posts, we had a lot of fun hiding easter eggs in Senpie. In this week's Behind the Bakery we'll take a look at some of our favorites, but don't worry because there's still more to find!The original idea of hiding references in Senpie actually started with the bad apples. We needed a way to destroy them, and when we switched art styles to anime the obvious choice was a ninja scroll (ofuda). After deciding the game was also about shop keeping, we realized we could make lots of items. This would give Granny something to spend her money on (we added the gachapon later), and it would also allow us to push the original Yoshi mechanic further. The scroll was the first item we created, inspired by the baddest scout in the sailor squad. • Senpie's Book of Friends - 30 January 2026

  This week we are going to discuss how we designed our bakery in Senpie. We wanted players to feel like they are peering "beyond the veil" into another world. We also wanted to capture the shopkeeping gameplay through interaction rather than menus.When we first started thinking about what a "spirit bakery" could look like, we were influenced by an episode of Natsume's Book of Friends. In it Natsume interacts with a tiny deity and the shrine it calls home. We made the exterior of the bakery a shinto shrine, adding Shimenawa over the open doors, and a Jizō Statue and stone lantern to decorate the exterior part of the shrine that's "in our world." The statue and lantern are also meant to add a sense of scale, miniaturizing the bake shop and making the shrine feel like a window into another world.Since Granny is running a bake shop, we added customers that queue up outside. • Let's make some pies! - 23 January 2026

  Last week we talked about how our prototype led us to pivoting to a new art style based on anime and yokai. This pivot actually went beyond just anime, as we started researching Japanese folk lore. One great resource we found was Yokai.com, the illustrated database of Japanese folklore, which has a wealth of information and some really gorgeous visuals. If you want to spend some time just going down a yokai rabbit hole, go there and click on random yokai to start your journey! Having unique ingredients wasn't just an aesthetic choice. We continued to tinker with our prototype, trying new ideas to move beyond the original Yoshi design of clearing the screen. We kept the bad apple corruption, but experimented with other ideas, at one point even adding a rhythm mechanic (which was a bit too difficult coupled with matching and stacking, but we did make the drum an unlockable item). • From Bad Apples to Senpie - 14 January 2026

  Senpie started life as a love letter to Yoshi on the NES - a fun little game made by GameFreaks (probably to keep the lights on while they were crunching on the original Pokemon). In Yoshi, you move Mario between vertical stacks of falling enemies. When two matching enemies collide they destroy each other. The best part is the Yoshi egg, which is split into a top and bottom half. When you stack enemies on the bottom half and then a top half drops it clears the whole stack.The core gameplay is solid and we haven't played anything like it since. So we started Senpie as a prototype to replicate Yoshi but with one twist in mind: a “bad” item — something that couldn’t be matched, and instead spread corruption through the stack.
