I still say the Hylics games are some of the prettiest around, with their striking mix of claymation and video capture. So I'm delighted to realise that, unbeknowst to me, creator Mason Lindroth occasionally give behind-the-scenes peeks at props and animations on Twitter. It is very interesting to see those original handcrafted figures. And it is very funny to discover that the process of animating one character's hands involved wearing a little cardboard green screen like a shroud while waggling a sexy gloved arm through the hole. - Claymation RPG Hylics 2 is out now - 22 June 2020
Today has brought the launch of Hylics 2 , sequel to the 2015 RPG with the best spellcasting animations in the genre. Made with a mix of clay models and stop-motion animation, it is such a looker. Sounds great, too. I dig its whole surreal, psychedelic vibe. The first one was great fun and I am very much looking forward to clocking off today so I can jack into the sequel. - Summer Games Done Quick 2019 announces June schedule - 15 April 2019
Time to pencil in another week of sick days and sleepless nights, as the competitors and games for this year’s Summer Games Done Quick have been announced, broadcasting from Bloomington, Minneapolis. The charity speedrunning marathon kicks off on 5pm BST on June 23rd, demolishing games at record pace around the clock until June 30th. As with their other summer events, they’ll be raising fat sacks of money for M decins Sans Fronti res. - Remembering Hylics, the surreal art RPG - 31 March 2018
'Can games be art' is a boring question. 'Can games be art galleries' is a much better one. The description seems to fit Hylics, which Mason Lindroth released in 2015. He called it "a recreational program with light RPG elements." It's really a pseudo-game made to be visited rather than played, with building blocks made of acid colors, scrambled words, clay, and an utter love for the absurd. Over the years, Mason Lindroth has become one of the most interesting names in the indie scene thanks to his distinctive art style. His works mix digital art with claymation: a technique nowadays rarely employed in movies, and even more rarely in games (the only other recent experiments that come to mind are Dujanah and Armikrog ). Mason Lindroth’s 2015 RPG Hylics is a game I want people to see. I want you to warm you eyes with its surreal and meaty clay-ish world, fill you ears with its warbling guitar, tingle your brain with its frozen burritos and ablative holopleather, move your hands in sync with the spellcasting gestures, and chill your spine with the claymation flesh melting off your weird crescent head when your fella dies. - Make Something Surreal With VA DA - 6 May 2016
Hylics is a surreal and beautiful game, a gentle JRPG built of clay, stop-motion photography, drawn animation, and… you know, I’m not even sure. It’s silly and funny and occasionally gruesome (your plasticine head disintegrating when you die is astonishing), and sounds like no other game I’ve played. We showed it at this year’s Mild Rumpus and I happily sat for hours watching puzzled people play on a big screen. Anyway! Sorry. I was just making up for that fact that we’ve barely mentioned Hylics before, and leading into what this post is actually about: VA DA , a fun weird free animation doodad by Hylics chap Mason Lindroth. …
