- Introducing Leopold and Reginald + First Post-Launch Patch - 27 August 2026
Overtrick launched on Monday, and tons of challengers have stormed the House of Diamonds! If you’ve managed to defeat Ada and Zelda, congratulations, and well played! But in the Hearts Tourney, you’ll find some new opponents, including the proprietors of the House of Spades: Leopold and Reginald.Next week, you’ll find Leopold and Reginald in the Clubhouse. They can be a tricky pair to take on, so be careful during the Small Slam and Grand Slam! While many other characters’ designs originate from 1920s fashion prints, Leopold and Reginald were inspired by photos from the era. I tried to stay true to the style of other characters, while also putting my own unique spin on them!Patch NotesI also addressed several issues reported by players, including:Steam Deck fixes for Swap and Mirror Mirror. Fixed an issue with Swap, where gamepad controller and Steam Deck players were unable to trade more…

- Introducing: Lillian and Ruby - 6 August 2026
Get ready to welcome Lillian and Ruby to Overtrick! For the week of August 10, they’ll be waiting for you in the Clubhouse.Backstory and Art ProcessLillian and Ruby are teacher and pupil, and bring elements of the game of Hearts into Overtrick. Like many of the characters in Overtrick, their designs are borrowed from French fashion magazines of the 1920s.As the solo developer of Overtrick, I do all of the art for the game, even though I feel more confident on the programming side. So I’m really grateful to the unknown artists who created these illustrations and prints, and always excited to bring their characters to life.Part of doing that is actually “animating” these characters. For Lillian and Ruby, I turned to Disney for inspiration. Lillian’s collar and long nails reminded me of Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty,” so I leaned into that when drawing her in different poses. To contras…
- Overtrick in Chinese, French, German, and Portuguese! - 29 July 2026
Overtrick's Demo is now available in five languages! Thanks to our wonderful translation team, you can now play in Chinese, English, French, German, or Portuguese. If you see any issues or want to suggest changes, I’d certainly appreciate you letting me know (join our Discord server!).We also localized the game trailer for all languages, and I wanted to write about making that happen! Normally, a game trailer is put together with recorded gameplay footage. If your game has text in it, then you have to record and edit gameplay across each language you want to localize for.For Overtrick, the trailer is actually auto-generated by the Godot game engine. Originally, I did this so that I could keep the trailer up-to-date with new art and animations from the game (and because I didn’t want to learn how to use video-editing software). Now, it makes localizing the trailer as simple as setting th…

You can get a taste of what’s to come by going to the Clubhouse and playing the Weekly Challenge.I’ve been playing Hearts Tourney and House of Spades a LOT, and I promise that they’re going to throw some seriously fun curveballs at you. Finally… Leaderboards!I want to congratulate the Global Top 10 for hitting way higher high scores than I could ever have imagined. But, now that the demo includes eight additional rounds, the current high scores aren’t goi…
- UI and Visual Updates - 26 June 2026

Also unavailable in the demo, but get ready for a very different kind of Overtrick! New Gameplay VisualsI’ve also introduced different tabletops, to add visual variety to the different matches. Last Week's LeaderboardsFinally, I added a way to see the leaderboard from Last Week’s Challenge. - Face Off Against Nina and Sylvia in This Week’s Challenge! - 22 June 2026
Ready for new opponents? Then head over to this week’s challenge! Nina and Sylvia are waiting, armed with some truly mind-bending boss slam abilities. I’m especially excited about Nina and Sylvia, not just because they bring an unparalleled fashion sense to the table, but because of what they represent for the future of Overtrick. To bring them to life, I had to completely rebuild the opponent AI system. Let me explain…A Digression About Game AIBefore Nina and Sylvia, boss slam abilities were static. Edith takes the lead on Turn #3. Wanda randomly disables an ability. Wesley neutralizes all 1-point tricks. These abilities change gameplay, but they’re also consistent and predictable.By contrast, Nina and Sylvia can dynamically activate “I’ll Take That,” which lets them swap a card they play with the most recent card you played. More importantly, they strategically choose WHEN to play it.…
- Leaderboards and Ranked Challenges - 4 June 2026
Looking to dazzle the world with your trick-taking skills? Or casually try a new build without starting from scratch? Whether you’re aiming to be in the Top 10, or looking for a few consistent practice rounds, this update is for you! Weekly Challenges. You can now unlock Challenges: short, 6-round runs, where you start with a curated set of special cards. Careful! Even in Round 1, you'll need to use your special cards to advance. Challenges are seeded, which means they use consistent pseudo-random number sequences, guaranteeing that you'll be dealt the same hand every time you start the challenge. It also means every other player will be dealt the same hand. You can retry the challenge as often as you'd like. Your highest score will be recorded on the weekly leaderboards, so feel free to try and optimize your run!Challenges are also a great way to practice a different build. This week’s…
- Play Something Else After the Trick (or, when tiny requests become massive) - 13 May 2026
Sometimes, a tiny request balloons into a massive update.@sliynk's request seemed reasonable enough, and a few other players also seemed excited. So I added a way to activate "Play Something Else" after the trick was over. But then I needed a way to say, "actually, I don't want to activate it," so I added a skip button. And then that skip button was annoying to press, so I added auto-skip.And then I tried playing a run and discovered...SO... MANY... BUGS......But it was 100% worth it.Gameplay: Activating Special Abilities After the Trick"Play Something Else" is now way more useful. And I reworked several other abilities, including "Diamonds Overload," which went from almost useless to maybe my favorite card ever! The new “Diamonds Overload” lets you convert one card in the trick to diamonds. In the example above, I could steal the trick from Wanda by turning Naomi's 10♣️ into 10♦️. Even if…

- Controller and Steam Deck support, plus fixes and tweaks - 29 April 2026
For all you gamepad controller and Steam Deck players, this one’s for you! I added icons and glyphs to Overtrick’s UI, to make it clearer which buttons to press when using a controller. Generally, you can use the left d-pad or left control stick to navigate through your cards or any menus, “A” to select something, and “B” to deselect.Steam Deck is currently my preferred way of playing Overtrick, and if you have suggestions on how to make it even better, please let me know!I also made a few updates and bug-fixes, including:Passive Special Card Icons. Players found the special card icons in the top-left hard to read, so I made them bigger, and added a solid background, so that they don’t blend with any patterns in the background.Title Screen Background. Lots of people said the new background looked like stars, so I decided to lean into that, and make them actually look like stars!Card Dra…
- New Look, New Gameplay, New Sounds! - 22 April 2026
BIG update incoming! First thing you’ll notice is new art for a new title screen and team selection menu. And who are those mysterious figures in the doorway? Guess we’ll have to wait for the full game to find out…Trick-taking gameplay also got an overhaul. The background, character interactions, and passive ability icons all got updated. I also made some changes to actually playing tricks, that should make winning tricks feel more impactful AND more approachable (especially for players unfamiliar with traditional trick-taking games).Part of what makes winning tricks feel more impactful are updated sound effects. If you manage to score multiple points per trick, you’ll hear some percussive and jazzy new sounds!…and a bunch of other changes. In no particular order:Shop. Added animations for buying cards in the shopRound Complete Screen. Added animations.Tutorial. Updated tutorial text.Sp…
- v0.1.1 Bug Fixes - 30 March 2026
Fixed two edge-case/race-condition bugs:Edith and Wanda's Small Slam. Fixed an issue where the reward for winning the first Small Slam was empty in certain cases.Repeating Rounds. Fixed an issue where players would occasionally find themselves repeating a round they had just beat.
- v0.1.0 - New character and card interactions! - 25 March 2026
First update notes! Last week, I made a bunch of improvements to interactions with playing cards and characters. Let's dive in!Character Interactions! Most noticeably, Edith now reacts to gameplay: celebrating victories and mourning defeat. You may also more generally notice all the characters reacting more, since I added additional emphasis on reactions.Card Interactions! New animations and interactions should make playing your hand should feel more dynamic. The card drop area has a new design, and the cards themselves react on-hover.I also added an option for "Single-click to play a card." This will replace the default "double-click to play card" behavior, but either way, you can also still drag cards to play them. This should make things more comfortable for players who are used to playing traditional card games on their computers. And other stuff...The version number now appears in t…
