Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. Before Tequila Works set about tugging heartstrings in their wistful puzzle-platformer Rime , they were full-on wrenching them out of your chest in their gritty zombie-platformer Deadlight . An odd origin story, perhaps, for a studio that’s now mostly known for their bright, colourful artwork and raw, emotional sucker punches, but Deadlight was very much a product of its time. I was pretty torn with sidescrolling platformer/survival ‘em up Deadlight when I first played it a few years back. For the most part, I enjoyed its zombie apocalypse narrative, its challenging gauntlet sequences and its wonderfully bleak presentation, however really struggled with certain jarring features – like how the protagonist would instantly drown upon impact in water, or how the screen would go all weird when he was exhausted. Just ask Adam about that one . Other folk I’ve spoken to loved it, though, which might be why a Deadlight: Director’s Cut is heading our way on June 21, bringing with it updated controls, full 1080p resolution, and a new Survival Arena mode which looks something like this: …
