- Embracer close Hitman Go developers just months after acquiring them - 1 November 2022
The developers of Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go and Deus Ex Go are shutting down. Onoma, previously known as Square Enix Montreal, were acquired by Embracer in August alongside Square Enix's other western development studios. Some staff will be transferred to another acquired studio, Eidos Montreal, sources told Bloomberg (registration required). Read more

Hitman: Codename 47 was released 20 years ago today. In all that time, IO Interactive have crafted an entertaining seven-game series (not including spin-offs), with the eighth aiming for the heart in January 2021 . The subject matter might be grim, but from the very first game, IO Interactive were always happy to fold information and easter eggs into their immersive sim (don’t @ me) to a ridiculous degree. The games all have murderdeathkills, but they also have hauntings, mythical creatures, and real-world actors as targets. I’ve had a blast digging up some forgotten facts and 47’s more bizarre moments (this does mean this list contains some spoilers, so beware). Wait, don't close the page. It's certainly no Blood Money, but this Hitman spin-off isn't as throwaway as that opening sentence would suggest. For one thing, this is no match-three time waster. GO is a proper puzzle game, filled with handcrafted levels and varied design. You play as Agent 47, in a fashion. He's the playing piece on a series of extravagant game boards, (and so about as stiff as Timothy Olyphant in the Hitman movie). As his pet project, Antoine Routon, Technical Director, worked with a local architecture firm in Montreal to create a real life Hitman GO diorama to bring that vision to life. The model created in that video will now sit in the Square Enix Montreal lobby as a reminder of where we came from.
