- Here's the full trailer for the cancelled Duke Nukem Begins game - 8 August 2021
The full trailer for a cancelled Duke Nukem game has been released, thanks to the animator behind the project. Duke Nukem Begins was set to be a third-person "origin story" and was originally supposed to have been Gearbox's first game with the license before the ill-fated Duke Nukem Forever . Development of Duke Nukem Begins supposedly began around 2007 and was halted in 2009, two years before the eventual release of Duke Nukem Forever in 2011. During this time, both projects moved from 3D Realms to Gearbox, and Begins was put on hold - before apparently being cancelled altogether due to the rights issues surrounding the franchise . Now animator Gregor Punchatz - who is best known for model work on movies such as Robocop and the monsters from the original Doom - has revealed the full "vertical slice" trailer his studio Janimation created for Duke Nukem Begins. Punchatz previously releas…
- Gearbox reaches agreement with Bobby Prince for use of Duke Nukem music - 22 December 2020
Gearbox and Bobby Prince have come to an agreement over the use of Duke Nukem music. In 2019, Robert "Bobby" Prince filed a lawsuit against Gearbox, alleging he owned the copyright on some of the music in 2016's Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, itself a remaster of the 1996 original. Prince believed the use of his music in the earlier Duke games was subject to a licence agreement between Prince and 3D Realms. Thus, Gearbox did not own the rights to certain music it thought it owned the rights to. Read more
- The sorry Duke Nukem saga continues as Gearbox sues 3D Realms - again - 16 June 2020
The sorry saga of Duke Nukem continues as Gearbox has launched a lawsuit against 3D Realms - again. Back in 2015, Borderlands maker Gearbox retained the rights to the troubled Duke Nukem franchise after a messy lawsuit with 3D Realms and Interceptor Entertainment over the Duke Nukem intellectual property. Previously, 3D Realms sold Duke Nukem to Gearbox, who finished development on Duke Nukem Forever and released the game in June 2011 - 15 years after the release of Duke Nukem 3D. Read more
- Gearbox are suing 3D Realms over Duke Nukem, again - 16 June 2020
Law. Law always changes, and it’s honestly a bit of a nightmare. Last Friday, Gearbox Software filed a suit against Apogee Software, the owners of Duke Nukem 3D developers* 3D Realms. Gearbox bought the Duke Nukem franchise off ’em back in 2010, and now they’re accusing 3D Realms of failing to mention that they didn’t own the copyright to some of the game’s music. This follows Gearbox’s 2014 suit that (supposedly?) established their full ownership of the franchise, and is the result of another ongoing lawsuit by musician Bobby Prince against Gearbox (as well as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and Valve Software), where he’s claiming that he merely licensed his tracks to them rather than outright selling. Basically, Gearbox are trying to ensure they don’t suffer legal costs because of 3D Realms’ alleged cock-up. It is: messy. (more&hellip…
- Duke Nuke 3D composer taking Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, and Valve to court - 30 September 2019
With a back catalogue including Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D, Bobby Prince certainly helped define the sound of much of early 3D shooters. Like most folk, though, I reckon he’s also a fan of getting paid for his work. Last week, the musician raised claims that 2016’s expanded re-release Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour included his music without asking nicely beforehand. Now publishers Gearbox, their CEO Randy Pitchford, and Valve Software are all facing a lawsuit from Prince for allegedly distributing Prince’s music without permission, nor paying him royalties.
