- Dev Log #23 - AFFINTY AND BOONS EXPANDED - 24 July 2026
The Affinity system was created as a way to solve an issue found with early GODBOX playtests. After spending some time optimizing their unit's code, players would often sit and watch the simulation run at five-time speed. There was not enough moment-to-moment gameplay, and players didn't feel incentivized to adapt their code. As a part of the solution, I introduced a system wherein rival deities would offer the player missions to complete. In exchange, the player would receive Affinity with that deity.Affinity can be traded to momentarily gain access to the blocks owned by these rival deities, which in turn incentivizes players to revisit and further optimize their code. This can also be a strategic decision, since the rival deities will be unable to use these blocks while the player has access to them. In the past, I was hesitant to put powerful blocks further away from the player's st…
- Dev Log #22 - HOW MANY FOLK DOES IT TAKE TO BREAK GODBOX? - 17 July 2026
HOW MANY FOLK DOES IT TAKE TO BREAK THE GODBOX MOVEMENT SYSTEM?This week I took some time to fix the previously very buggy movement system! Check out this short showing me stress testing the new and improved system. (Apologies. Steam doesn't let me insert youtube shorts. - Dev Log #20 - MISSIONS & MISSION PROVIDERS - 24 June 2026
If you've kept up with these Dev Logs, you'll know the Tartarus build revealed some issues with moment to moment gameplay. Players would simply spend a good while optimizing their code, and then sitting back watching the simulation run in five time speed for the rest of the playtest. The first step in rectifying this was adding a cost to blocks, meaning that players would have to revisit code every once in a while to optimize it once they got enough creation points, and to consider how many creation points they want to use coding, versus how much they want to save towards unlocking their next domain or placing down a blueprint. The second step was introducing the "block access" system in which players can trade with other deities for access to their blocks. In the past couple of weeks, I have been working on the third step of the solution. Missions! The primary point of missions will be…
- Dev Log #19 - UNIVERSAL PAUSE SYSTEM AND NOTIFICATIONS - 12 June 2026
In the previous couple of weeks, I have been reworking the way players have access to blocks. Now, players will need to purchase blocks, giving them some smaller goals to work towards, as well as a different level of strategy to interact with (like which block to buy, and when). They can also trade access to blocks with different deities, gaining Affinity with these deities by giving away access to the blocks they own, or spending Affinity to gain access to blocks from domains owned by rival deities. This week, I had to extrapolate that system in order to catch scenarios where the player loses access to blocks that are already in graphs they have built. For example, if they have a block like "FindEdible" in their folk's behaviour graph, and they give access to that block to a different deity (thus losing access themselves), what happens? This forced me to revisit a system that needed som…
- Dev Log #17 - LIFE & DEATH - 22 May 2026
This week I completed a significant milestone: build Tartarus (named by Discord community member Lord Void). This build was a long time coming. Its main purpose is to test out the feasibility of the "rival deities" concept as a core game mechanic. Both the idea of competing with rivals for unlocks in a shared tech tree and the idea of competitive counter-programming are novel, and therefore risky. I wanted to create a small demo such as this with only two deities (death and fertility) before investing more time on an idea that might not work. If you'd like to test out this concept for yourself, please join our discord server! (link at the bottom of this post). THE GOOD NEWS FIRSTThough it took longer to complete than I expected, the build is done! Despite coding AI agents being outside of my comfort zone, I have proved it is technically viable. Not only that, but a big chunk of the work…
- Dev Log #16 - THE ART OF OVERSCOPING - 8 May 2026
As a developer, I have seen conventional wisdom swing back and forth between "make small games", and "make big games". This framing of scope as size has never been useful to me. What has helped me in the past as an artist is to think about scope in terms of ambition. The useful question is: what feels just out of reach? What will certainly be very hard to accomplish, and what I might fail at? As an artist, you learn not to be afraid of failure, because (at least at clown college where I learned my art) an ambitious failure is better than an unambitious success. This has led me to many, many failures, but I have seen myself countless times achieve things I did not think were possible. I overcame challenges I thought were beyond me with solutions varying from hacky to elegant, born from the necessity of seeing an "overscoped" project through. This is the philosophy I use to approach every…
