- Bug Fixes, Engine Update - 26 May 2021
Hi folks, You may be wondering about the latest update to the game! This is a maintenance update with a few good bug fixes in it - the biggest one is a fix for the problem some players saw where they could not find all the stories in the game. In addition, vignettes are better randomized, some performance updates, other minor bugs, and the engine was updated to a newer version in order to make things run better and be easier to fix in the future. This should hopefully also fix the crash some users were seeing with newer MacOS versions. Thanks for playing, and please let me know if you experience any new problems.
- Where The Water Tastes Like Wine spins some Chinese American yarns - 15 July 2019
Dim Bulb’s quiet and contemplative story tell ’em up Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is still out there, trudging down America’s dusty depression-era roads, collecting and telling stories. Today, it has a few new ones to tell. Today’s Gold Mountain Update adds an official Chinese localisation, produced by a crew of dedicated Chinese-speaking fans led by one Ryan Zhang. More importantly for English-speakers, it adds a new set of stories to the game, focused on the lives of Chinese Americans and their alchemized folklore as they became woven into America’s fabric. Developer Dim Bulb's positively received Depression-era storytelling adventure, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, is ready to spin a few more yarns, courtesy of its newly released, and free, Gold Mountain update. Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, the brainchild of Johnnemann Nordhagen (co-founder of Gone Home developer Fullbright), sends players, in the guise of a roving skeleton, on a cross-country adventure around the United States. It's a game of tales, with the goal being to tease out new stories from the strangers you meet on your travels, trading yarns you've heard elsewhere to gain their trust and learn the end of their particular narratives. The new Gold Mountain update introduces a fan-made Chinese translation , lead by Ryan Zhang, and a number of new stories focussing on the experiences of Chinese-Americans and their impact on American history and culture. As Dim Bulb puts it,…
- Where the Water Tastes Like Wine gets new Chinese-American stories - 15 July 2019
Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an ambitious journey through the heartland of American history that unfortunately failed to live up to those ambitions, and is best remembered these days for being a " commercial disaster ." Despite that, a new update for the game called Gold Mountain was released today that adds full Chinese localization to the free Fireside Chats, and new stories based on the experiences of Chinese immigrants. The Chinese localization was done by fans, according to the Steam update , who have been working on it for four months so far. "We are humbled and gratified by this, and we hope that Chinese players can play and enjoy our game, and understand our criticism of and reflection on America history and American culture," creator Johnnemann Nordhagen wrote. "We know that China has its own wonderful and varied folklore in its thousands of years of history, and we hope…

- Where the Water Tastes Like Wine: Gold Mountain update - 13 March 2019
It is always a hope for a creator that their work can be appreciated widely, across the divide of different countries and languages. 我们认为,艺术和文化理应跨越语言的藩篱,为世界范围内传播和赏鉴。 When we released this game, we are were pleased to see the passionate, excited fans who love the game, and to share American folklore and history with the world. 发布这款游戏,我们即为见证了粉丝们的热情而感到满足,也为世界各地的人们能有机会了解到美国文史而感到荣幸。 Some fans go above and beyond, and create their own art, or writing, or other work of their own to pay homage to the game. 不仅如此,一些粉丝更通过艺术创作、写作或其它作品方式来向游戏致敬。 Some of them speak multiple languages, and decide to translate the game into their own language. This is no small undertaking - Where the Water Tastes Like Wine has almost a million words, and the writing in the game is based very strongly on American culture and history. It is also beautiful and poetic, something often difficult to capture in translation. 他们…

- Where the Water Tastes Like Wine: Fireside Chats is a free 'standalone experience' - 15 November 2018
The story of Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an interesting one. Some game sites rated it very highly, while others—including ours—were much cooler on it. Some of the tales it tells "are beautiful, and they're all important," we wrote in our review , but they're told "at an agonizingly slow pace" that brings the entire experience down. And in any event, it was a sales disaster . Despite all that, publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment isn't letting it go quietly. Today it released a free, standalone "companion" to the game called Where the Water Tastes Like Wine: Fireside Chats , which adds new story content to all of the tales told in the 16 chapters of the core game.    "Like the full game, the Where The Water Tastes Like Wine: Fireside Chats experience allows players wander through the United States—and through a century of history…

- Steam Summer Sale recommendations: 2018 edition! - 26 June 2018
The old quote is wrong: neither death nor taxes are, it seems to me, as terrifyingly certain as the Steam Summer Sale . Yes, once more we can add to the heap that is our backlog by buying games for, what, five quid, on average? But there are so many to choose from that it’s easy to get flustered, so who better than the staff of RPS to hand-pick the best ones for your consideration (rhetorical question; do not answer)? Check out the full list below for a mix of games that should suit all pockets and tastes. (more…)
- Cross-country storytelling adventure Where the Water Tastes Like Wine adds 15 free new tales - 5 June 2018
Depression-era storytelling adventure Where the Water Tastes Like Wine just received a new update, adding 15 free new tales to enliven its captivating cross-country exploration. Developed by Dim Bulb, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a bit of an unusual one, setting players off (having been turned into a skeleton by Sting) on a genteel jaunt through a folkloric Depression-era United States. You'll meet strangers along the way, and, sitting by the flickering firelight, must gradually gain their trust, sharing the stories you've heard on your travels until they're willing to reveal their own tales. Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is the brainchild of Fullbright co-founder and Gone Home programmer Johnnemann Nordhagen, and features stories by a wide range of writers, each brought to life by a strong cast - including Firewatch's Cissy Jones, Mass Effect's Kimberly Brooks, Gone Home's Sa…
- Where The Water Tastes Like Wine adds new stories and autowalk - 4 June 2018
Story-collecting stroll ’em up Where The Water Tastes Like Wine has added more strange, delightful, and terrible tales to hear in a free update. Our dearly-departed Adam praised the original game’s Americana stories, written by a wide team of writers, in his Where The Water Tastes Like Wine review and more are certainly welcome. The dead man wasn’t so keen on the game around the stories, mind, but the developers are continuing to tweak that. This update also added an auto-walk button, see, to make your skellington stroll without you hold a key or button. The game is on sale now too. (more…)
- Where the Water Tastes Like Wine adds 15 more stories and automatic walking - 3 June 2018
We were pretty excited about American folk-tale travelogue Where the Water Tastes Like Wine when we first heard about it, but upon release our reviewer Tyler Wilde was moderate in his praise : "It tells over 200 tiny tales, and several bigger ones, at an agonizingly slow pace. There's truth to find within its choppy transcontinental trek, but it comes at the expense of sore eyes." Since then it's been updated, and a patch from March added the ability to return to locations by using the mementos found there, and also increased the distance covered by fast-travel between cities in the second half of the game. The June 3 patch , called the 'Tall Tales Update', further tweaks the pacing, with an autowalk option activated by pressing F so you don't have to wear down the W key on your long trek across the United States (it's right bumper on controller). As well a…

Thank you for playing!
- 4/10 Patch - Better Content Distribution - 10 April 2018
Hi! Today I'm putting in a change that will hopefully smooth out the story distribution. Instead of having all of the stories in a spot show up right away, some of them will only appear once you're further along the main task. This will mean that visiting places you've already been will be more interesting, and that you won't get more stories than you know what to do with early on. As always, please let me know about feedback or bugs in the forum! Thanks for playing.
