Just a full single player game for $4.99.And here's the good part: \if you own Chess Kingdom, you get a discount on it through the bundles.\ Steam knocks off what you already own, so you only pay for the rest. And no, Chess Kingdom support isn't stoppingI know how this normally goes. Dev a new game, first game quietly gets abandoned. - Chess Kingdom update August 2026 (and new game announcement) - 3 August 2026
As always I'm a bit late, but here is everything that got changed since the last patch and my new game announcement! PerformanceThe stutter while you move pieces is gone. Two heavy jobs were running on the same thread that draws the board: the opening book was being rebuilt and copied twice per move pair, and every animation and move list update forced a full page layout. Across a typical match that added up to more than a second of freezing. On the same test match afterwards: long tasks went from 5 (1154ms total, worst 335ms) to zero, the worst frame from 341.8ms to 41.6ms, hitches over 100ms from 5 to zero, and average FPS from 90.4 to 115.0.The main menu no longer crawls after you finish a game. Background position analysis kept grinding away after the game had ended, so the post game screen and the main menu could fall to roughly 10 FPS, and sometimes 3 or 4, until you restarted.Fas…
- More Ways to Play While Ignoring a Meeting: Android, Cross-Save and Mini Mode! - 1 July 2026
Hey everyone, Chess Kingdom is now available on Android! You can now take the game with you, play a few moves away from your PC, and continue your progress when you get back. Android versionThe Android version is a paid download. I want to be honest about that: Chess Kingdom is still a small solo-developed game, and with around 1,000 units sold so far, I cannot realistically give away a full second platform version for free. The mobile version helps support continued development of the game, and I really appreciate everyone who understands that. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chesskingdoms.app What is not yet available in the Android version is the new and improved AI Chat functionalities, that might be to heavy for mobile and the Online matches. Due to server costs that is simply not possible at the moment.Cross-SaveThe Android version supports Save Sync, so you can…
- Update shaped by refund reasons - 28 June 2026
This update improves UI scaling and windowed mode support, especially on smaller resolutions. Menus and game screens have been adjusted so important buttons and information stay reachable instead of being cut off. This patch was made because of player feedback and refund reasons mentioning that the interface could not scale properly or was not fully visible. Even though I would prefer everyone to give the feedback before refund :D It's was still genuinely valuable and helped make Chess Kingdom better. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to report what is not working.
- A Rival, A Season, and an Opponent Who Talks back! - 25 June 2026
Hey everyone 👋It's still just me back here, so updates tend to come in waves. I go quiet, head down for a while, then surface with a pile of things I built straight from your feedback. This is one of those, and it turned into a big one. Thank you for every bug report and every "wouldn't it be cool if" in the meantime. It genuinely all lands on my desk. Here's what's new, and why I built it.💬 You can actually talk to your opponents now I'd given the bots real personality in how they play, but you still couldn't actually talk to any of them. So now you can. In offline matches you can chat with your opponent and they answer in character: they know they're a Chess Kingdom regular, they've got their own backstory and taste, they react to how the game is going, and they remember what you said earlier. Over 50 of them, each their own person. The part I care about most: it runs entirely on you…
- ♟️ The Big One - Online Lobbies, Smarter Opponents & a Whole Lot More - 5 June 2026
Hey everyone 👋 It's just me here — Chess Kingdom is a one-person project — so sometimes it takes a while before I can properly update you on what's happening. But I keep listening to the feedback, looking at the data, and updating based on it. I'm genuinely grateful for all the feedback I'm getting. Here's what's new, and why I built it. 🌐 You can actually play real people now Why: chess is meant to be played against humans, but I simply didn't have enough players online at once to make that interesting. Now there are lobbies, though, so you can open a lobby and then leave. When other players come along, they'll see it on their main menu and can jump in. And since it's all async, you don't have to sit in the game continuously. 🤖 Opponents you'll actually remember Beating one bot felt like beating all of them — they were kind of interchangeable. I wanted real characters. The problem w…
- Chess Kingdom — Save, share, and analyze your games - plus a big bug sweep! - 23 May 2026
Hey everyone, I haven't posted here in a while — that doesn't mean development stopped. I keep reading every review and fixing things as quickly as I can. So I figured I'd do a catch-up post on everything that's changed. Please keep the feedback coming — I'll keep making the game better. What's new Export your games as PGN. Save any finished match as a .pgn. It's in Two places: a button on the post-game screen, and in your profile under Recent Games (where you can also export your last 5 games as one bundle). Save your game as an image or animated GIF. Same post-game row got two siblings: a 1280×720 share-card image of the final position, and a GIF replay of the last 5 moves. What got fixed Study & Compete features that didn't work for everyone. Opening Explorer, Endgame Trainer, Guess the Move and Tournaments were all reachable but broken for some — empty boards, crashes, no progress.…

- Chess Kingdom is Officially 1.0 - 1 May 2026
Hi Everyone, Today I'm very excited to announce that **Chess Kingdom is now launched as a 1.0 release!** That doesn't mean I'll stop developing though. Chess is a very complicated game, and this game contains 5 game modes, 2 variants (Atomic and Kung Fu Chess), 40 AI personalities, a 6-chapter campaign, 40,000 puzzles, an Opening Explorer, Endgame Trainer, Board Editor, and 48 piece sets across 24 languages. So I doubt I found every single bug. Plus if there's more the playerbase wants and I can add, I will. A lot has been added during development. A short overview: - A native Linux build - Completely overhauled the AI to make it smarter and more distinct - Added many more AI opponents (40 in total) - Added Atomic Chess and Kung Fu Chess - Added League mode - Overhauled the onboarding to make it easier and more fun to jump into - Added 3D pieces for every set in the game - Added more lo…
- Native Linux Build, Smarter AI and Localization fixes! - 25 April 2026
Welcome back to the board. This update lands three big improvements at once: Chess Kingdom now runs natively on Steam Deck, the AI plays smarter by actually looking at the whole position before it commits to a move, and we've gone through the entire localization stack so the game feels native in every supported language.Steam Deck — Native Linux BuildChess Kingdom now launches directly on Steam Deck without forcing Proton compatibility. Just install, hit Play, and you're in. No fiddling with launch options, no compatibility tool overrides — it Just Works on SteamOS Gaming Mode.Under the hood we ship the same controller-friendly UI, full Steam Cloud sync (your Windows save and your Deck save stay in step), and the SDL gamepad bridge so the Deck's controls behave the same way they do on Windows. Smarter AI — Position-First ThinkingEvery AI opponent has been upgraded to analyze the full bo…
- Lots of News: Checkers Kingdom, 1.0 Pricing, and Patch 0.9.6 - 22 April 2026
New Game: Checkers KingdomI'm officially announcing Checkers Kingdom! And good news for everyone here: Chess Kingdom players will get a discount when it releases.Don't you worry though: 1.0 still comes first. I'm only announcing Checkers Kingdom now because Steam kind of demands you gather wishlists for at least a while before you launch. Consider this the heads-up; all my focus stays on finishing Chess Kingdom 1.0. Pricing: A Small 1.0 Price IncreaseBefore we get to the patch, a quick note: I'll be increasing the 1.0 price a little bit, right before 1.0 comes out. So not yet, but that does mean right now is the most affordable Chess Kingdom will ever be.1.0 is packing tons of new content: more countries, more AI opponents, two new game modes, and a whole UI overhaul. That alone is a reason for a small bump. But more importantly: on Steam, you sell more than 90% of your units on sale. Th…
- The Big Bang Update - Atomic Chess, Online Kung Fu, and a lot more! - 14 April 2026
With the game getiting into a better state. I wanted to take some time to add another variant! ATOMIC CHESS! It's a chess variant where every capture triggers a 3×3 explosion, pawns survive the blast, and blowing up the enemy king wins the game on the spot. It comes with a full hub of its own, a Survival mode, and a mini-tutorial that walks you through the rules before your first match. On top of that, both Atomic Chess and the existing Kung Fu Chess now support online multiplayer for the first time - play anyone with a 4-digit code, anywhere in the world. Alongside that I rebuilt the Kung Fu Chess hub to match the new Atomic layout, added a proper AI-opponent picker (with named personalities and flags) to both variants, gave the profile page a country-identity system, and replaced the synth chess sound effects with studio-quality audio. The backend got 88 automated tests to keep everyth…
- Update — April 13, 2026 - 13 April 2026
Big update today. This one is mostly about fixing things that were genuinely broken, plus a handful of new features that kept coming up in feedback. If you ran into the bug where the AI moved twice in a row, or your progress vanished when you closed the game, those are gone now. Here's the full list.Bug FixesAI giving itself extra turns In some games the AI was getting multiple consecutive moves, skipping the player's turn entirely. In the worst cases the AI made 3 moves in a row, and the move history showed them as if the player had made them. The root cause was stale AI results from a previous turn being applied to the current one. Fixed with a turn token system — each AI turn now gets a unique ID, and any result that arrives late gets discarded.Player losing on time while waiting for the AI If the AI was thinking for a long time, the player's clock kept running. In extreme cases this…
- Kung Fu Chess is back and the UI is improved! Patch 11th of April - 11 April 2026
This is a big one. Two brand new game modes, a completely redesigned UI, and a whole lot of chaos. Let's get into it. NEW MODE: Kung Fu ChessChess just got a whole lot faster.Forget taking turns. In Kung Fu Chess, both players move at the same time, in real time. There are no turns — just you, your opponent, and pure speed. This isn't a gimmick mode. This is chess with the handbrake ripped off.Simultaneous play — both sides can move at any time. No waiting. No turns. Just go10-second cooldown — after you move a piece, it's locked for 10 seconds before you can use it again. Choose wiselyPieces travel in real time — 1 second per square. You'll see your rook sliding across the board while your opponent's knight is already mid-jumpPremoves — queue up a move on a piece that's still on cooldown. It fires the instant the cooldown endsKing capture wins — no checkmate, no stalemate. The only way…
- AI Now thinks During Your Turn - April 9 Patch! - 9 April 2026
Hey everyone! Big update today - I've been deep in the AI engine fixing some nasty bugs and making the bots play much smarter. Here's everything that changed.AI: Smarter and FasterAI Now Thinks During Your Turn After improving the AI's strength, one downside was that every move could take up to 10-12 seconds against the harder opponents. To fix that, I added AI Pondering, the AI now starts thinking while you're deciding your move, predicting what you'll play and preparing its response in advance. If the AI guessed your move correctly: it responds almost instantlyIf you surprise it: it does a normal search, but still faster than before thanks to its preparationNew setting: "AI Thinks Ahead" in Gameplay settings (on by default). You can turn it off if you want lower CPU usage while you thinkI'm still testing whether these changes affected the AI's overall strength, so if you notice anythin…

- Chess Kingdom: Patch Notes April 7, 2026 - AI improvements, and Bug fixes - 7 April 2026
Hey everyone,This update addresses several issues players reported over the past week. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.AI varietyThe AI was too predictable, you'd see the same openings and the same moves every game. We've reworked the opening system and fixed a bug in move selection that caused the AI to always pick the exact same move in any given position. Games against the same bot should now feel different each time, while each difficulty level plays at the same strength as before.Rating persistenceA bug in the save system caused player ratings to reset to 800 on every game restart. The ratings were being saved to disk correctly, but the loading code skipped the ratings field when reading the file back — so it always fell back to the default value. Fixed. Ratings that were already lost unfortunately can't be recovered, but all future progress will persist.League standingsP…
- Chess Kingdom Update - The Staunton Collection - 6 April 2026
Hey Chess Kingdom players!I've been busy today and have a packed update for you! As before everything is based on the feedback I received from players. It's your feedback that will continue to drive these updates. New Staunton Piece SetThe default piece set has been completely redesigned! The old "Classic Wood" set has been retired and replaced with a brand-new Staunton set featuring beautifully crafted pieces with a clean, polished aesthetic inspired by the iconic tournament-standard Staunton design.Override Opponent PiecesAdded a new toggle in Gameplay settings to override your opponent's piece set with your own. When enabled, both sides of the board will always display your equipped set instead of your opponent's.No more visual clutter from mismatched sets during online games!Piece Identification LabelsAdded a new "Show Piece Labels" option! Hover over any piece with your mouse to se…
- Patch Notes - April 4, 2026 - 4 April 2026
Hey everyone! Based on your feedback about AI opponents, I've made a major improvement to how the AI selects moves. Here's what changed:AI ImprovementsPreviously, the AI had a "style overlay" system that would sometimes override the engine's calculated best move with a different move that matched the opponent's personality. The idea was to give each bot a distinct play style, but in practice it caused higher-level opponents to make moves that didn't match their rating — especially at Normal and Master level.I've removed the style overlay and replaced it with a pool-based selection system. How it works now: The engine calculates all moves, then builds a "pool" of acceptable options based on the opponent's Elo rating. Higher Elo = smaller pool = stronger play. The AI's personality picks between moves within that pool, so style only influences the choice when multiple moves are equally good…
