- Friday Takeaway #7 - 31 July 2026
Feasgar math! Welcome back to the semi-regular development blog for Grease Trap ’99. It’s been an exciting few weeks. The demo is out, and you lot have been giving me lots of great feedback! I’ve even had streamers find the game and actually play it? Mental. I’m incredibly grateful for all the coverage the game has had so far. Check out this playthrough from Hazzaween here:Last week we also hit 500+ wishlists! A massive milestone. Thank you so much to everyone who has been following along so far. “How’s actual development on the full version going, James?”Glad you asked. Right now, I’m locked in on script writing, getting the story nice and polished for the full version before sending it off to the voice actors very soon. Sadly, script writing and business admin don’t produce many interesting behind-the-scenes images, so instead I’ll share this: a fantastic fish supper I got at The Wate…
- Grease Trap '99 Demo is Out Now! - 17 July 2026
Feasgar math! The Grease Trap ’99 demo is out now! Download it from the Grease Trap store page.Okay, if you’re still here and didn’t immediately go and download it, here’s a little more info. It’s roughly ten minutes long. You can deep fry pizzas, deal with NEDs, and make new friends in the basement. It is still very much a work in progress. There are bugs, the story is messy, and there’s lots more to add, but I do think it gives a good taste of the “vibe”. So please check it out and send me your feedback! Some more news about this particular demo: it was voted Best in Show by the public at Glasgow Indie Games Fest last week! I’m immensely grateful for this, because I had the honor of showing my work alongside amazing games and experiences made by some of the coolest people in the Scottish, and wider, indie space right now. It was an insanely fun weekend, a great opportunity to get in-pers…
- GIGF Tomorrow and Demo next week - 10 July 2026
Feasgar math!Been a while! But I have lots of news.First up, the demo for Grease Trap ’99 will be available to you lovely people next Friday! It’ll be all set for you to play the roughly 10-ish minute demo over the weekend. Deep fry pizzas, deal with NEDs, and make new friends in the basement. To celebrate the upcoming demo release, I’ve also updated the screenshots on the Steam store page to show more of what the game looks like now. Here they are: I can’t wait to let you all give it a try. I genuinely want all the feedback, good and bad, so I can make the full game reach its full potential. Also, as you may know, tomorrow I’ll be at Glasgow Indie Games Fest, showing off the same demo that comes out next week. So if you’re there in person, you can play it a full week early. And I’ll also be handing out stickers and giving tarot card readings. The internet is lame. Offline happenings are…
- First Trailer! - 12 June 2026
Feasgar math! The first trailer for Grease Trap ’99 is out! Check it out on YouTube, TikTok, the Steam store, anywhere with moving pictures, really. It’s an exciting time because this is the first time I’ve been brave enough to show off long(-ish) chunks of gameplay. Things are gradually getting more polished. Also: 250 wishlists! We did it! Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported the project so far. And finally, I actually had a takeaway for Friday Takeaway this week. I got a massive smoked sausage supper with curry sauce from the Anstruther Tailend, the best chip shop in Fife. It’s the wee one sandwiched between the tourist traps on Shore Street. It was great, but it put me 1,000 calories over my deficit. Updates might be a little sporadic as we get closer to GIGF and I lock in on working on the demo build, but I’ll try to keep posting here and on TikTok as much as I can.Love yas…
- Grease Trap ’99 @ Glasgow Indie Games Fest - 29 May 2026
Feasgar math!Big news this week: Grease Trap ’99 will be showing at Glasgow Indie Games Fest 2026!The demo will be playable in person at GIGF on 11–12 July, alongside a brilliant lineup of indie games from Scotland and beyond. This also means one important thing: no Steam Next Fest for Grease Trap ’99.That’s right. If you want to be one of the first people to get a proper taste of the demo, you need to get out of the basement and see it in person. The demo will then be released on Steam the weekend after the festival, so if you cant make it you’ll still get a chance to play the demo before release.I’m genuinely really excited to be part of the event. There are loads of games on the lineup I’m looking forward to checking out, especially CROWDED. FOLLOWED. by NIGHT DIAL which I’ve been following for a long time!Tapadh leibh for following along. Hope to see you eejits in person in Glasgow.—…
- Friday Takeaway #2 - 22 May 2026
Friday Takeaway #2Feasgar math!Welcome back to Friday Takeaway, the semi-regular development blog for Grease Trap ’99.This week I’d like to introduce a key character I’ve been working on: your boss. He’s a proper geezer who loves nothing more than a chicken tikka, a pint down the local, and a week in Benidorm with the Mrs. Unfortunately for you, he’s also the game’s secondary antagonist, which means he’ll spend a good chunk of the game critiquing, berating, and generally making your shift worse. Here are a few screenshots of his model in progress, along with how he looks once he’s inside the engine with the lighting, post-processing, and effects applied. It’s always fun seeing a character go from a clean Blender viewport into the grimy, crunchy world of Grease Trap ’99.I also have a very exciting festival announcement to make, but I’m not allowed to talk about it until next week, so you…
- Friday Takeaway #1 - 15 May 2026
Feasgar math!Welcome to the first Friday Takeaway, a semi-regular development blog for Grease Trap ’99. I’m hoping to use these posts to share what I’ve been working on, what’s changing, what’s breaking, and what strange things are crawling out from under the fryer. For anyone new here, Grease Trap ’99 is a retro horror game set during a late shift in a Scottish fish and chip shop. It’s part work-sim, part slow-burn nightmare. You’ll be cooking orders, keeping customers happy, dealing with the pressure of service, and slowly discovering that something is very wrong beneath the surface. The game is fully voiced in Scottish Gaelic, with English and Gaelic subtitle options, and I want it to feel like a nostalgic little slice of Scotland.Over the last month, I’ve been focused almost entirely on the demo. A lot of that work has been on the core chip shop systems: taking orders, preparing food…
