In the game, you have a series of tasks to manage that directly affect your physical condition, stress levels, and overall progress. One of the more interesting (and nutritious) options is the cooked chicken.Originally, it was meant to be a simple, quick snack to restore your energy during a brutal shift. The physics engine, however, had entirely different plans. During testing, we noticed something weird: every time a player dropped a piece of cooked chicken on the floor, the game completely lost its mind. The chicken wouldn't just sit neatly on the ground - instead, it launched into the air at high speed, ricocheting off shelves and zooming down the aisles like a miniature rocket.   If you’ve ever played Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, you’ll know there’s a tear-inducing mechanic where you have to reset some of the venue’s essential systems, like the ventilation. This is painfully slow; many a player has screamed at their PC as the reboot process moves like a glacier, on a snail, in slow-mo.You’re in a rush, it’s life and death, there isn’t a moment to spare… but the machine insists.   Hey! It's time to start our Retail Therapy. But first things first...Pixel Art... Why Pixel Art?!It is no secret that indie devs go for retro-style games because they are easier. There is no 3D modelling, no ray-tracing, and no YouTube videos with commentators sucking through their teeth when the title dips to 30 fps instead of 60. We can just say: "It is meant to have a low frame rate. It is retro!" But beyond that, 16-bit inspired titles can just look gorgeous. Take Stardew Valley for example. • The boarding house beta - 28 May 2026

  How it started and... how it's goingIf you want to make money, you have to think about the paying customer. A year ago, I knew I wanted to make a game, but I couldn’t settle on an idea. Ultimately, I looked to my housemates. In my case, my housemates are 17 teenage boys, because I live in a boarding school. I pitched two ideas: a wacky football game, and a stressful shop game. Unanimously, the kids voted for the wacky shop game, and the rest is history. Over the last nine months, I’ve strived to develop a game that my ‘housemates’ would enjoy playing. In our house, particular favourites include EA Sports FC, Hollow Knight, Five Nights at Freddy’s and Geometry Dash. More recently, the boys have gotten into Enter the Gungeon, at my recommendation. What surprises me is how intently some of them gravitate towards difficult titles, undeterred by the thought of having to play the same section…
