The original Prey was one of the most striking and innovative FPS games of the 2000s - I mean, it had portals before Portal, for crying out loud. It was the excellent result of an admittedly turbulent development cycle that spanned roughly a decade, and that instability spread to its planned sequel, Prey 2 . Set to be published by Bethesda, the company unfortunately scrapped it officially in 2014, breaking the hearts of many who were excited to see this ambitious sequel. Sure, we eventually got Arkane's interpretation with 2017's Prey, but it was a radical departure from what Human Head's Prey 2 was set to be. Chalk it down - another triple-A game using Denuvo anti-cheat is removing the software. This time around, it's Prey , the 2017 horror game from Arkane Studios, that's losing the DRM system. Announcement of the patch came on Reddit , where it was revealed the update was due to arrive this week, but has been delayed. "Today we planned to perform a backend deployment for Prey in order to remove Denuvo, but some of you may have seen a 16GB or 4GB update instead," community manager Abigail Tyson wrote in the thread. "We've rolled back this deployment, so you should no longer have any large updates for Prey or Prey: Mooncrash. The update to remove Denuvo will still be deployed, but at a later date." Although the response to this is generally positive, some commenters feel it should've happened sooner, since Prey has been available on GOG DRM free for sometime now. Steam is the only storefront…

Human Head Studios, developer of the original Prey, has shut its doors after 22 years. In its place is Roundhouse Studios - a new company owned by Bethesda. All Human Head employees were offered a job at Roundhouse as part of the transition, Bethesda has said. Today's press release from Bethesda does not go into detail on what became of Human Head in its final days, although a farewell blog update from Human Head itself blamed "economic realities". The team had just finished working on Norse action role-player Rune 2, which arrived with little fanfare on the Epic Games Store for PC yesterday. Read more

Prey 2 is one of the cancelled games I think about the most. That trailer was enough to build up a lot of anticipation and dreams of being a bounty hunter on an alien planet. Instead we got the excellent but dramatically different Prey from Arkane. We'll never be able to play Prey 2, but now we can listen to some audio logs.  Uploaded by Andrew Borman , Museum of Play's digital games curator, the logs are all from the perspective of protagonist Killian Samuels, but all of them relate to his predecessor, Tommy. Some story details were reported in 2017 that made it clear Tommy was a big part of the sequel, and these logs give us a bit more background about their relationship. Prey ’s multiplayer mode, Typhon Hunter, sounds like a perfect fit for the paranoia-inducing FPS. Launched yesterday, it puts one player in the shoes of Morgan, while three other players get to be mimics, using their shapeshifting abilities to hide from the gun-toting scientist. Unfortunately, players are reporting lots of issues.  Typhon Hunter was originally due out in the summer but it was delayed for six months. Despite the extended development time, it still seems bare bones, missing things like a tutorial, basic PC options or proper matchmaking. One problem that keeps cropping up in user reviews is the poor communication options. You can’t turn off voice chat, you can’t mute other players and there’s no text chat.
