• Fassbender to star in Assassin's Creed movie - 9 July 2012

  Michael Fassbender, who has starred in recent sci-fi movies Prometheus and X-Men: First Class , will take on the lead role of an as-yet unnamed assassin as Ubisoft moves to bring its Assassin's Creed franchise to the big screen. Fassbender "Michael Fassbender was our first choice (to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero)," Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said in Variety . "Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor." The plot will be similar to the games, where the character learns he is part of a long line of assassins and has been kidnapped by a Templar organization to recover lost artifacts. With each new game having a different hero, it is quite possible Fassbender will play a brand new assassin and not Ezio, Altair, Desmond, or Conner. • Ubisoft goes after author in Assassin's Creed dispute - 31 May 2012

  Author John L. Beiswenger had sued Ubisoft , claiming its popular Assassin's Creed franchise had too many similarities to his 2002 novel, Link . Both share chair-shaped devices that allow characters to relive memories of ancestors. Two days ago, Beiswenger backed away from the case, with the option of revisiting it later. Ubisoft isn't sitting idly by, however. Instead, it's asking the court to declare the author's original suit as "without merit" to eliminate the chance the case is reopened. The French publisher filed its own complaint against Beiswenger, asking the court to declare once and for all that the author's case was frivolous, according to court documents obtained by Gamasutra . • Report: Assassin's Creed movie rights pursued by Sony - 20 October 2011

  Sony Pictures is reportedly entering final negotiations to adapt the Assassin's Creed series into a feature movie. Ubisoft had been shopping its most popular properties to various Hollywood production houses, gaining the interest of some studios including Universal. Ubisoft wants to more creative control of their properties than is usual for deals of this kind, and that was apparently a key factor for Sony leading the pack. As video game properties go, Assassin's Creed seems ideal for a movie. A historical epic starring Ezio (i.e. Renaissance Batman) certainly has potential, and the series carries more than enough crazy mythology to fuel a plot. Then again, mileage may vary, as Disney's big-budget Prince of Persia adaptation fizzled after holding similar promise.
