  • Spider-Punk lands in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite thanks to a giant mod with a revamped art style and new modes out this week - 18 December 2024

Fists up, a big fighting game mod is due out this weekend. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite came out in 2017 and got some flak for its plastic figurine art style. But this year a modder began work on an overhaul that would grant the game pretty cel-shaded visuals. Since then the modding team has grown to 40 people and the scope of the mod's features has ballooned. It's now going to include new moves, stages, costumes, and a chaotic-looking 2v2 multiplayer tag team mode. All good news for biff 'em up sickos, as the mod is due to release on Friday. Read more

  • A modder is beautifying Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite with cel-shaded visuals - 3 May 2024

Crossover fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite first sauntered onto various videogaming mechanisms back in 2017. We forgot to review it. Oops. But others did, sometimes complaining about the art style , which was a chunky and plastic-looking departure from previous games in the series. It's now almost seven years later but at least one person has not forgotten this missed opportunity. A fighting game modder has been tinkering with shaders to bring the comic book style of previous games to Infinite. Looks cool. Read more

  • Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is finally easy on the eyes thanks to a lone modder - 2 May 2024

One modder is taking on the gargantuan task of giving Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite a serious makeover. The 2017 Capcom fighter has long been dunked on for poor visuals, but with a bit of elbow grease, cell-shading, and some modeling work, we may be on the verge of a real transformation for MvC's ugly duckling. The hero in question taking up the charge of this particular project is Ryn , a game dev and artist who has been posting her work on this Marvel vs Capcom project over the past few days. The results - shared via Twitter - are reminiscent of characters ripped straight from comic books, giving more of a stylistic aesthetic to what was previously a somewaht bland presentation. This includes cell shading to backgrounds, which benefit from a similar effect as a result . These posts have been met with high praise as you can imagine, bringing in interest from fighting game and marvel fans…

  • How fighting games reimagine action comics – and why they should be weirder - 16 July 2020

A Panel Shaped Screen is a monthly column where Giada Zavarise explores how comics and videogames inspire each other. This month is all about the way fighting games handle the tricky business of adapting action comics. The marriage between action comics and fighting games is one that transcends mediums: an enthusiastic relationship based on love, mutual respect, and a shared passion for punching people in the face. Some licensed games, like Dragon Ball FighterZ , are played at a professional level in esport tournaments. Others, like My Hero: One’s Justice , are more simple and accessible. Some are team-based, while others are arena brawlers. All are generally good fun. And yet, sometimes I think parser games would be better suited to adapt this genre to screen. (more…)

  • For the first time, Evo won't have a Marvel game - 7 February 2018

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite will not feature at this year's Evo tournament - sounding the death knell for the embattled crossover fighting game. Overnight, officials announced the eight-game lineup for Evo - the biggest fighting game tournament in the world - and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was conspicuous by its absence. It means this year's Evo will be the first without a Marvel game, and is surely the final nail in the coffin for Infinite. • Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite flops - 1 February 2018

Capcom's video game business had a strong quarter, despite crossover fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite flopping hard. In a press release reporting the financial results for the nine months ending 31st December 2017, Capcom confirmed Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite had sold one million copies since its September launch. • Black Panther, Monster Hunter & Sigma hit Marvel vs Capcom Infinite - 21 October 2017

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is a maddening game. At heart, it’s a solid addition to the classic Capcom tag-team fighting series. A festival of explosions, colours, superheroic excess and Capcom’s forgotten characters dusted off for a cameo. Unfortunately, it’s also a mess of questionable design decisions and bizarre corner-cutting, letting down an otherwise excellent core experience. The latest of these questionable decisions is the choice to sell three characters featured in the main story of the game as paid DLC shortly after release. This week on Tuesday, Black Panther, Monster Hunter and Sigma arrived for the price of 6.49/$8 each , on top of the 40 you’ve already paid. Ouch. (more…)
