  We've made some pretty big improvements to PENCILS DOWN, with more questions, better variety, new accessibility options, and several fixes based on your feedback. AUDIO * We've lowered the volume of the main scare. It was louder than it needed to be, so we've brought it down to a safer level while keeping the impact. * There's also a new Reduced Sudden Noise option under Accommodations if you'd prefer sudden sounds to be even quieter. QUESTIONS * The question pool has more than doubled since launch, with new questions across general knowledge, science, history, popular culture, red ink questions, and Section D. * Math questions are now generated fresh for each examination, with difficulty matching the form you're taking. * The game now remembers questions from your recent attempts, so you're much less likely to get the same ones again on your next run. * We also found and removed a few…

  Red ink Most questions give you all the time you need. Some do not. A few questions are printed in red ink, and when you start reading one, the question itself begins to disappear. The letters blur. Words become harder to make out. Eventually, the sentence stops making sense. Whatever you managed to understand before that happens is what you have to work with. Take too long, and you may find yourself answering a question you can no longer read. Red questions also put an eraser at stake, so there is more than one reason to keep moving. The chalkboard There is a chalkboard at the front of Room 44. You can look up at it whenever you want. On most forms, it is exactly what you would expect. On harder forms, it may not be.   The Proctor There is one other person in Room 44. You never get a good look at him. He walks the rows while you work. You will hear him coming before you see him, and when he reaches your desk, you are supposed to stop writing. Keep writing, and he notices. He will not say anything. It simply goes on your record. And your record is what the examination is really keeping. Attendance Every so often, the public address system calls a student's name. If it calls yours, you have about four seconds to stop what you are doing and look up. Look up in time, and the proctor moves on. Miss it, and your examination ends. That is one of the things you may not expect from PENCILS DOWN.   PENCILS DOWN comes out on September 4, 2026 It is 1999, and you are sitting in Room 44 for a standardized test. At first it seems ordinary. There are questions about history and questions about science. Then it asks what you did three minutes ago, and it turns out the test already knows the answer. What you actually do Bet on your answers. Before you commit to one, you say how confident you are. Confidence is worth more points, but a confident wrong answer gets you noticed. Look after your erasers. You only get so many, and someone is counting them. Put your pencil down when the proctor walks the rows. If you keep writing, he sees it. It is a single player game with adjustable difficulty, and you can play it using only the mouse if you prefer.
