What Remains Of Edith Finch is a very upsetting collection of interactive short stories about the brief, tragic lives of a cursed family who live in a monstrous treehouse. It's also a wonderful show of experimentation , switching genres from story to story - one minute you're a playable bestiary on shuffle, the next you're beheading fish in a cannery as the worktable disappears beneath your scrolling daydreams. The developer's next project seems to be pursuing a similar balance of whimsy and darkness. - Xbox Game Pass is losing some brilliant games soon - 16 August 2022
The latest titles to come to Xbox Game Pass have been announced, and while there's some good titles on the way, it's also that time of the month again where we commiserate the great games that are soon to be leaving. Amongst the titles leaving is NBA 2K22 , Two Point Hospital , and Elite: Dangerous . So, I've bad news for both avid space explorers, basketball pros, and hospital managers alike, as all three will be bidding farewell to Xbox Games Pass on August 31. This isn't all, either. There's truly a cracking line-up of titles leaving in just a couple of weeks, which consists of a few quaint but enjoyable indie titles. Annapurna Interactive announced yesterday during its games showcase upgraded versions of both Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch are coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both games will see a 60fps upgrade on the consoles, while Edith Finch will also benefit from 4K on PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Outer Wilds upgrade will be made available on September 15, and it's a free download if you already own the game. Read more

Back in the 1990s, in that long-ago Pleistocene era when I was at secondary school, we were taken on a trip to the small Peak District village of Cromford. There, aside from pulling strange faces at bemused locals, we were regaled with stories of noted industrialist Richard Arkwright, who in 1771 snapped up a modest section of land in the village and built a cotton mill. People a lot smarter than me argue this was the birthplace of modern manufacturing - triggering a centuries-long chain that led to the creation of... well, pretty much everything we buy today. But its significance to the industrial revolution is not why I love Cromford. I love it for something much more prosaic: its fabulous little bookshop. What a place. Read more

A short while into What Remains of Edith Finch, you come to a beach. It's night, but you can still make out the silhouette of something, half sunk, against the horizon. You'll probably want to check that out, you think, but not now - no boat, no way to get there, too far out - so along the little beach you go. Waves wash and lap, lights from some other town star the stretch of distant coast, the moon lacquers the ocean, and a memory lingers of the last story you saw, grim and only just finished, in a black tunnel from which you've just emerged. Your diary wonders something aloud: maybe it would be better if this all died with you. It doesn't, and on you go, through some rubble and nonsensical debris - a totem pole? - through lingering memory, to the path off the beach at the other end. A flight of stairs made of stone, which leads to another flight, made of wood, which leads to wherever…

Alice L. was the person who really encouraged me to dive headlong into the pool of long build projects that is my fandom of The Sims 4 . She is both one third of the Council Of Alices and one third of the RPS VidBud team on YouTube, and she’s just started a new Sims 4-themed video series. In Can We Build It?, Alice L. attempts to build an iconic room from another game but in The Sims 4’s build mode. In this first one she’s had a crack at the twins’ room in What Remains Of Edith Finch , which should count as doing two rooms, really. Calvin and Sam shared a bedroom, but they had very different design sensibilities. Video games are famously awash with death yet disinclined to think it through, to explore what death means beyond failure and a restart or victory and the spoils. What Remains of Edith Finch is among the most powerful exceptions to the rule. Equal parts speculative fiction anthology and dynastic tragedy, it is the tale of a family destined to die prematurely, as retold by the last surviving member. Like Gone Home multiplied by 13, it gives you the run of a vast house apparently constructed by Dr Seuss, each room containing an object that plunges you into the final moments of its owner. It's not death that overtakes the Finches, mind you, but their fantasies about death. They are carried off as much by their attempts to imagine the approaching end as by illness and mischance. What Remains of Edith Finch is a story about a young woman, a strange house, and a family curse, told in a slow, contemplative walking simulator-style narrative adventure. It's really good stuff—one of the best things I've played in years, honestly—and in case you missed hearing about it last week, from today until January 25 it's free on the Epic Games Store .  You'll need to set up an Epic account to get it, naturally, something Epic is working very hard to convince you to do . Fantastic first-person walk-o-story What Remains Of Edith Finch ( don’t call it a walking simulator ) is free for keepsies right now on the Epic Games Store, and I highly recommend nabbing it. It’s a beautiful and melancholic tale with a magical realist bent, exploring the lives and deaths of the family who’ve lived in a strange and lonely house for generations. It’s one of the best PC games and all, says us. Epic are signing up all sorts of exclusives to get their store going, including having Ubisoft onboard with The Division 2 , but little excites more than free video games. (more…)
