I've lost count of how many games the Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames universe has appeared in at this point, and it's time to check another heavy hitter off the list. Stellar Blade director Hyung-Tae Kim has drawn the ire of Nier: Automata character designer Yoshikaze Matsushita thanks to an image the former posted in celebration of Yoko Taro's new Evangelion project. Matsushita, who worked on enemy design for Nier: Automata , is best known for sculpting the 'Emil head' mask that you'll often see Yoko Taro wearing during public appearances. Platinum Games has produced some truly great action games in its time, and Nier Automata is right up there near the top of the pile. It's hard to believe it's celebrating its ninth birthday - I think another wrinkle just formed on my face... However, as part of the festivities, publisher Square Enix has revealed two exciting things. Firstly, that the game has surpassed ten million copies sold. If you've been glued to the Paris Olympics as of late, and consider yourself a keen fan of action RPGs from the past few years, you ears probably perked up during the artistic swimming last night. That's because that the Japanese team competing in that event decided to pair their performance with a certain song from Nier Automata of all things. As noticed by spectators last night, the Japanese artistic swimming performance was paired with A Beautiful Song from the game's official sountrack. Posted to Twitter, this was then noticed by lead singer for the OST Emi Evans , as well as Yoko Taro himself, both showing appreciation for the Olympic cameo. The Japanese team would ultimately take home 4th place, sadly missing out on a medal by just six points. Nonetheless, it was a great show worth watching. Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a, the anime adaptation of the beloved Square Enix game, is finally coming back this July. Last year saw the arrival of the Nier: Automata anime, a series obviously highly anticipated by fans of the series, but one that suffered from some serious production issues. It started airing in January, but the fourth episode was delayed by almost an entire month for COVID related reasons, and then episodes 9-12 were delayed from March all the way to July, again because of COVID. It was a rough go for the anime, but this coming July will see the return of the series with a second season (well, technically a second cour, but it's being referred to as season 2). Ok. So, Yoko Taro and a couple of the other key people behind the NieR games have cheekily teased a new project that they're working on together, very much leaving it up in the air as to whether the thing is related to NieR or not. Seriously, the quote even has the word 'laughs' in it in brackets, who knows what they're cooking. Speaking in a Famitsu interview (thanks, Gematsu ), NieR series producer Yosuke Saito was the one that did the teasing about the project, which involves him, director Yoko Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe. "I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now," Saito said, "I’ll have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be Nier, it might not be Nier. (Laughs.) That’s about all I can say for now." Read more

Yu Miyake, a member of Square Enix who has overseen the development of a number of Dragon Quest games since joining the publisher all the way back in 1992, is reportedly set to step down from his position as a producer on the series, after some delays in the creation of the next entry in it. This is according to Bloomberg , which reports that Miyake will be making a move over to taking charge of Square Enix's mobile games department once he's moved on from his current position on Dragon Quest. Apparently, there are already some folks being tabbed as potential replacements, with one in particular sounding like they're maybe, er, NieRer than most. After a long wait of no news, it's finally been confirmed that the Nier: Automata anime is finally returning some time this year. The Nier: Automata anime started last January, adapting the popular RPG into animated form for the first time, later finishing in July.
