- PS Plus February gets 17 new games across Premium and Extra tiers today - 21 February 2023
A fresh lineup of PS Plus games for February has just been released, meaning those with an Extra or Premium tier subscription are now able to download over a dozen excellent new games to the home console. The new wave of 17 games are widely sourced from the PS4 and PS5 library, however there are also a handful of PS1 games for you retro heads out there with a Premium subscription! Do you ever get sold on a game purely on the strength of how its enemies look? I’m sure this happens to me a lot, but just off the top of my head, Killzone, XCOM , and Dark Souls all first got my attention this way. The trailer for Oninaki – an upcoming, classic-style JRPG from the I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear gang at Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory – features these awesome looking goblin lads on a mural. Stop me if you ve heard this one before: a ragtag group of orphans wake up one day and decide to slay some monsters, as all small-town gangs are wont to do. This is the opening of Lost Sphear . After bonking some bunny-mutants to death in a nearby field, they discover that their idyllic hometown has blinked out of existence, replaced by a gaping white void. But, soon enough, one of our heroes has a dream that reveals that he and he alone possesses mysterious power that can restore these lost objects through the power of memories. In most video games we play the role of restorer. The world we enter is broken in some way, and we must piece it together again. In Chrono Trigger, perhaps the greatest of all the 16-bit era Japanese RPGs, this work is carried out along generational lines. Travel back in time, locate one of his ancestral mothers and offer her a life-changing gift and she vows to always bring up her children to promote kindness and generosity. I’m here with a short message for you from the director of the game, Atsushi Hashimoto: “In this title, we prepared many new features along with a great deal of improvements from I am Setsuna. Various areas have been upgraded and the overall volume, in terms of the scenario, has also increased significantly. As such, it was a difficult task for the development team with continuous struggles along the way, but I firmly believe we were able to develop a game that players will most definitely enjoy. If you fancy JRPG action in a retro way, here’s Lost Sphear out today. It’s the second RPG from Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory, the studio behind I Am Setsuna , and it too riffs on ye olde JRPGs. I won’t pretend to be well-acquainted with the genre but: yes, JRPG stuff. We do have a review coming from someone who actually knows a gad dang but we only just got our hands on Lost Sphear so, for now, here’s word that the game is out. Lost Sphear , the new game from I Am Setsuna studio Tokyo RPG Factory, tells the tale of a young boy named Kanata, whose world is literally disappearing, piece by piece. Possessing the unique power of Memory that enables him to restore what's been lost, he and his friends set out on a mission to put things right. The game won't be out until early next year, but you can get a taste of what's to come by way of the demo that was released today on Steam .  The demo showcases some of the game's central features, including real-time combat and the Artefact system, "which allows players to utilize restored Memories to customize their user interface, obtain player bonuses, as well as advance the story."    The controls are pretty brutal, and will presumably (hopefully) be properly implemented for the full release. But for now there's no mouse support, so…

A demo for Square Enix's upcoming I am Setsuna successor Lost Sphear is now available to download in Europe and North America on Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Lost Sphear tells the story of Kanata, a self-taught swordsman who wakes one day to find that his hometown is disappearing. As tends to be the case with these things, it's up to Kanata and friends to thwart the forces of evil and restore the world. Lost Sphear is the second title from Square's Tokyo RPG Factory, and, like I am Setsuna before it, is a heavily nostalgic take on the classic J-RPGs of the 90s. It shares a similarly delicate aesthetic to its predecessor but, to my eyes at least, looks to have more personality - what with the pyramids and pirate ships and smoggy Victorian cityscapes and such - than the pretty but ultimately rather bland I am Setsuna. The retro-styled JRPG Lost Sphear , announced in May by I Am Setsuna developer Tokyo RPG Factory, follows the adventures of Kanata, a young boy whose hometown has begun to disappear. To restore what's been lost, he and his friends "set out to rebuild the world around them with the power of Memory by manifesting thoughts into matter."  I said at the time that the description didn't really give me a firm grasp of what it's all about.
