• EA opens new studio in Seattle to work on first-person games, led by Marcus Lehto - 20 October 2021

  Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the Halo universe, has been hired by EA to lead one of the two new studios its opening in the Seattle, Washington area. Lehto was previously the president and game director at V1 Interactive, the developers of sci-fi FPS Disintegration. • In single-player, Disintegration feels like the real Halo 2 to me - 15 March 2021

  I have a theory, sweetly unburdened by any kind of evidence, that argues that developers sometimes try to recreate the power and pleasures of using actual game-creation tools for their players, but without the attendant need to understand maths or architecture or much in the way of technology. To put it another way, I suspect they take what they love about a tool or a bit of software, and they transform it into something the player can love too. I feel that very strongly while moving about on Disintegration's Gravcycle, a beautiful machine, all but invisible to the first-person player during main missions, but constantly present in the way it ghosts over the rock and dirt and concrete of the game's levels, directed, it seems, more by impulse and desire than the things I'm doing with the sticks and triggers of the pad.   Developer V1 Interactive, the studio founded by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, has announced it will be closing down, less than a year after the launch of its debut game Disintegration. Lehto founded V1 Interactive in 2016, and Disintegration - a sci-fi-hued blend of first-person shooter and real-time strategy game set against a futuristic backdrop of climate change, pandemic, and war - launched in June last year. Unfortunately, the game's multiplayer component - supported by a real-money in-game store - struggled to find a significant enough audience, and V1 ultimately decided to end multiplayer support in November , just five months into the game's life.   It’s just five months after the launch Disintegration and already its developers are saying goodbye to its online multiplayer. The hoverbike FPS meets RTS hybrid failed to find an audience that would make it worth keeping the multiplayer alive, its developers say. The singleplayer mode remains playable. (more…)

• Halo co-creator's Disintegration shutting down multiplayer servers in November - 17 September 2020

  Disintegration, the sci-fi shooter from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, will be ending multiplayer support across all platforms (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC) on 17th November due to a lack of "sufficient audience", just five months after launch. Developed by V1 Interactive, Disintegration sets its enthusiastic first-person shooting action against a futuristic backdrop of climate change, pandemic, and war, splitting its focus across a strong single-player campaign and a selection of multiplayer modes. Eurogamer's Emma Kent had plenty of praise for Disintegration's solidly enjoyable core when she reviewed it back in June , but expressed huge concern over a desperately underpopulated multiplayer mode that appeared to be dead-on-arrival just days after launch.
