- UPDATE: Small bug fixes - 28 July 2026
This update fixes a few small bugs: Fixed a bug in today's earlier update where the folder picker dialog on Windows was stuck behind the game window (I have three monitors and did not notice, sorry not sorry). Fixed a bug where the solitaire music would continue playing when exiting Sigmar's Garden II in the journal. Fixed a bug in the custom puzzle editor UI where the blackout overlay was offset incorrectly and had a cutout in the top-right corner.
- UPDATE: In-game option for setting the GIF output directory - 28 July 2026
Today's update adds an in-game option for setting the GIF output directory. Clicking the "SET" button should open an OS-level folder picker dialog, which seems like exactly the kind of thing that won't work for many people, especially if you're on a more esoteric operating system. If you run into any trouble, email me at [email protected] and we can investigate!

Today's update adds a Russian translation for the Journal of Alchemical Engineering, contributed by TrottingHeart from the unofficial Zachtronics Discord.
- UPDATE: Korean DLC translation - 3 July 2026
Today's update actually contains a Korean translation of the De Re Metallica DLC, unlike last week's update that only translated the puzzle names and the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Thanks again to Haxton from the unofficial Zachtronics Discord for this contribution.
- UPDATE: Korean DLC and journal translation - 1 July 2026
Today's update adds a Korean translation for the De Re Metallica DLC campaign and the Journal of Alchemical Engineering, contributed by Haxton from the unofficial Zachtronics Discord. It also contains the following fixes: Changed the GIF frame to localize the names of metrics, since it already localized the names of puzzles. Fixed a bug where the guilder sign (G) was replaced with a dollar sign ($) in the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean translations of the game. Fixed a bug where pressing the escape key did not close the new journal issue menu.
- UPDATE: Minor improvements - 17 June 2026
Today's update includes the following changes: Puzzles in the journal now have a variety of music instead of a single song. Fixed a crash when loading a solution that referenced an input or output that was deleted from a custom puzzle. Fixed an issue where the new achievement would only show a progress update when you solved a puzzle in a journal issue that you had previously not solved a puzzle in.
- UPDATE: Various quality-of-life fixes - 16 June 2026
Today's update adds a few small quality-of-life fixes: You can now click on the journal issue name to open a menu that lets you quickly select a different journal issue. The current journal issue is now persisted in your save file, so that when you relaunch the game it will be open to the same page as last time. You can now press F10 to reload the list of custom puzzles. Pressing F10 to reload the current solution should now be much faster if you have many solutions. Fixed a bug where scrollbar handles could get so small that they were unclickable.

Today's update adds the final issue of the Journal of Alchemical Engineering, at least for now. It also adds a new achievement, The Way of the Philosopher, for players who solve at least one puzzle in each of the 24 journal issues. Thank you to everyone who submitted a puzzle in the last few months (over 750 submissions!) and even more thanks to the super-players who sorted through these (did I mention there were over 750 submissions?), picked out the best, and grouped them together into thematic sets.Volume CVIII, Issue XII: Highlights from the Alchemical ExpositionThe first-ever Alchemical Exposition was a celebration of the spirit and ingenuity of the greater alchemical engineering community. Practitioners from all over the world convened to share insights, exchange ideas, and even give members of the public a rare opportunity to view the latest developments. We are proud to feature…
- Volume CVIII, Issue XI: Small-Scale Construction Crafts - 10 June 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Volume CVIII, Issue XI: Small-Scale Construction Crafts While research to support the large-scale building projects initiated by the Great Houses has shown a tendency to dominate today’s alchemical science, a dedicated cadre of independent practitioners has managed to initiate a revival of interest in older, half-forgotten traditions. These particular selected formulations hearken back to a time when alchemists proudly refined everyday tools, common substances, and building materials for anyone who needed them.
- UPDATE: Portuguese and Russian fan translations for the DLC - 5 June 2026
Today's update adds Portuguese and Russian fan translations for the De Re Metallica DLC. Many thanks to Yuri Nikolai and TrottingHeart respectively!

- Volume CVIII, Issue X: Inside the Soria Glassworks - 2 June 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue X: Inside the Soria Glassworks Though difficult to imagine today, House Soria once teetered on the brink of dissolution. The story of its recovery and rise to new heights is often cited as an example of fortune’s unpredictable wheel. Chance, however, played little part: behind the dramatic change was a canny and ambitious young heiress, who led a bold reorganization of the House’s monolithic glassworks into smaller, more agile units, each one staffed with sharp and motivated alchemical engineers unencumbered by tradition or rank.

Today's update adds an additional salt input to the Shimmering Chain journal puzzle.
- Volume CVIII, Issue IX: Frontiers of the Infinite - 26 May 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue IX: Frontiers of the Infinite For centuries alchemists had a reputation for working in solitude, closely guarding their secrets until they could emerge triumphantly with a singular astonishing breakthrough. But this ancient way of working is growing rarer as a new generation of alchemical engineers have redefined the field in favor of open collaboration and shared discovery. Nowhere is this new mode of innovation more present than in the rapidly advancing field of advanced fabrics and woven materials.
- Volume CVIII, Issue VIII: Apothecary Roots - 19 May 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue VIII: Apothecary Roots Alchemists today are quick to dismiss the idea that they are simple brewers of potions. As lamentable as it is that this outdated notion of the alchemist’s work persists in the modern era, we cannot and should not ignore the history of the field, in particular its origins in back rooms and basements where an extensive array of tonics, elixirs, unguents, and other apothecary concoctions were first developed and, over time, perfected.
- Volume CVIII, Issue VII: Foodways - 12 May 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue VII: Foodways Despite the promise of alchemical development to drastically change life, certain mundanities persist. One such example is food consumption: the fact that sustenance must still be ingested to animate worker and noble alike is a curious holdover in this advanced age. Since the problem has not yet been satisfactorily solved, incremental improvements to the production and quality of various foodstuffs must for now suffice.
- Volume CVIII, Issue VI: From Obscurity to Renown - 6 May 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue VI: From Obscurity to Renown Even though alchemy itself is a science, alchemical careers are anything but. Sometimes brilliant alchemical engineers toil for many years in little-known workshops, making important but unsung contributions, before one particular discovery finally attracts widespread attention. In this issue, we are proud to present a compilation of innovations that marked turning points in their creators’ fortunes.
- Volume CVIII, Issue V: Decorative Arts - 28 April 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue V: Decorative Arts Readers will be familiar with the great many artists and designers who labor over the interiors of Great Houses, ensuring nothing falls behind their competitors in opulence and luxury. What may be lesser known is how often alchemical engineers are found at the centre of this work, contributing novel materials that help ensure every tapestry, every wall sconce, and every spoon shines brighter than ever before.
- Volume CVIII, Issue IV: Ballistic Alchemy - 21 April 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue IV: Ballistic Alchemy Though the field of alchemical ballistics finds lonely champions every few decades, the overwhelming consensus remains that devices for impelling small projectiles at great speed are all but useless except in very rare situations. The following contributions should allow any alchemical practitioner still convinced of their potential utility to satisfy their curiosity and reach the same conclusion.
- Volume CVIII, Issue III: Alchemy for the Home - 14 April 2026
Today's update adds a new issue to the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. Do you have a puzzle you'd like to see included in a future issue? Submit it here: https://tally.so/r/KYDzWX Volume CVIII, Issue III: Alchemy for the Home Progress leaves no lives untouched, even those of commoners. Over the last few hundred years, large communal dwellings have given way to small, separated households that afford a measure of comfort and privacy. Though the innovations catalogued here may seem insignificant to alchemical engineers used to more outwardly visible applications, rest assured they have played a major role in the advancement of domestic life.
