- Version 7.21 available in 'current' beta branch. Testers welcome. - 15 August 2023
Version 7.21 of Hartacon Tactics has been released in the 'current' beta branch. Use password 'htcurrentbuild' to access it and opt in. This update brings substantial improvements to mouse controls for a faster and better gameplay experience. Below you see a sample of the improvements to the UI, with on-screen buttons to rotate and zoom the map, as well as new units and turns 'cards' which are now themed with the alliance graphics. Improvements to the controls have been a pain point in reviews for this game for a long time, so I would love to hear your feedback and to understand from you if this is the right direction. Also if you have other suggestions on features you would like to see in the game, big or small, let me know. Currently I am considering adding consumables, extending the roster of campaigns to 16 units (with max 8 selectable for battles), wanderer units to save that join…

- v7.20 update - Map editor improvements. - 24 July 2021
Hey everyone, this is a small update bringing you an improved GUI for the Map Editor if you are using mouse and keyboard. Say goodbye to the somewhat awkward on-screen arrows you had to click on to move around the map. Now you can do everything by pointing and clicking directly on tiles, selecting the appropriate tool for painting, deleting, and changing the elevation. Also, map scrolling now works in the Map Editor as well. Some of you might be used to games where the mouse right button is used to go back in menus, and now that is possible too. The mouse right-button click is mapped to back/cancel throughout the game. Here's the full list of changes: New effects for Water and Wind skills. Mouse right-click in command help bar does not trigger main command. Mouse right-click mapped to back/cancel throughout the game. Six commands shown in command help bar. Use mouse left-click to paint,…
- v7.19 update - Map scrolling, extended unit walk range and new damage preview. - 6 July 2020
Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well. This is a somewhat more substantial update than other recent ones. Version 7.19 introduces a new element to the gameplay, which is that of extended movement range for units. I am sure you have seen this in other games of the tactical genre, it allows unit to walk a few extra steps at the cost of not being able to perform an action for the turn. It's useful in situations where you want to quickly close the distance from the enemy, run away or block certain positions with your unit. The other major change in this version is a redesign of the damage preview. It now shows damage and hit chance more clearly and it also shows HP and MP bars with a visual preview of the change. I spent quite some time to improve controls and the overall player experience. If you play the game with mouse you will be happy to hear you can now move the map by holding th…
- v7.18 update and call for comments - 29 April 2020
Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing alright in these crazy times. Version 7.18 brings a few small changes to the interface of the campaign aiming at improving the flow of the gameplay. When the worldmap is not active it is now seen with a sepia shading, and when the party moves between locations with or without battles, the map remains active, so you are not taken back to the campaign menu. There are a few more messages for the player describing the outcome of campaign battles. I also changed the default keyboard mapping of the B button to the Escape key, which is a more typical setup if you play with mouse and keyboard. Finally the game has received a lot of criticism about the controls. Hartacon is a game born on the XBOX 360, so it was originally designed to be played with just the controller. This Steam version can be played with keyboard and mouse (separately or together) but the…
- v7.17 - Small update - 10 April 2020
Hey there, I hope everyone reading is healthy and safe. Following an interesting review, although a negative one, including some good ideas about re-organising the menus, I did just that. I introduced an Extra menu, which now groups Map Editor, Achievements and Credits, making the Main menu less busy. The Extra menu features an artwork fom Douglas Draco. Parties management has been moved within the three game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Quick Battle. I introduced a feature that should have been there from the start, which is making the mouse pointer disappear and stop interfering with keyboard and controller when the mouse is not used. You don't need to open the settings menu and disable it altogether now. Finally I added some on-screen mouse controls during action in battles to rotate and zoom the camera as well as open the settings menu. I hope you enjoy this update and if you ca…
- Abusive Reviews - 22 August 2019
It looks like Steam allows users to insult developers in their reviews. Reviews should stick to the contents of the game and not be personal attacks directed to a person. It would be ideal if people who barely touched the game didn't have the arrogance to write a review, but I guess that is asking too much. There are reviews complaining there is no story. There are no cars too, and no football teams, because they are not what the game is about and there is no promise of a story anywhere in the description or presentation of the game. The game doesn't compare to Tactics Ogre? It doesn't sound fair to compare an indie game created by a single developer with a masterpiece of the genre created by a team of professionals 100 times bigger, not to mention the price tag is ten times smaller. Thanks for reading and please help by flagging reviews that cross the line between legitimate criticism…
- v7.15 - Small update - 13 April 2019
Hey there, this is just a small update containing a few new icons, and a new section in the Help describing Uniques and Rarities: Uniques are weapons, protections or accessories that cannot be bought in shops. Some fighters may come equipped with one or more uniques and they can be obtained as loot. Rarities are weapons, protections or accessories that can only be obtained as loot in dungeons battles. https://cdn.steampulse.org/steam/asset?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsteamcdn-a.akamaihd.net%2Fsteamcommunity%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fclans%2F29273393%2Ff2fefe7dc655894f6c5ae027d6f95404deb2aa5a.png I hope you enjoy this update and if you can spare a minute spread the word about the game, like the page on fb www.facebook.com/HartaconTactics and follow on Twitter twitter.com/HartaconTactics Ciao, Charlie
- Release - 2 January 2019
As of 1 Jan 2019, Hartacon Tactics has ended its Early Access phase and is officially released. Please keep the feedback coming, in form of reviews, discussions and bugs reports as development is by no means suspended. The focus from now on is consolidation though, therefore if you would like to share ideas for new features or game mechanics, your contribution is greatly welcomed but don't expect any mayor tranformations.
- Beta v7.14 - Close to final release - 17 December 2018
Hi everyone, the default and current branches of the game have been updated to Beta v7.14, meaning everybody gets the most up to date version of the game. Here's what's new: - Mp-recover passive skill. - All physical attacks damage armors. - Damaged armors have proportionally reduced Pdef, Mdef and Eva stats. - Back command can be used as a shortcut to enter View mode. - Added Legends to multiplayer. - Original soundtrack. There are a few gameplay changes. I've read comments about how some players found skills much more useful than regular attacks, so I tried to balance that by having attacks always damage armors. Damaged armors are less and less effective as their health decreases from four to zero, but don't worry, they get repaired at the end of every battle. There's a useful shortcut now available in battles during commands selection. With "Back" you enter View mode without having t…
- Beta v7.13 - 16 June 2018
Hi everyone, the "current" branch has been updated to Beta v7.13. Here's what's new: - Depth of dungeons depends on difficulty. - Fixed a bug affecting elemental alignment. - Window border glitch fixed. - More on-screen clickable buttons added. - New fire magic animation. - Changed how turns are counted for dead units timeout. - Atom skill damage decreases with distance. - Improved battle command selection with analog stick. - Changed action delay calculation to include distance moved. - Only active locations shown on map during campaign. - Updated a few maps. - New skills page. Less than I hoped to put in this update, but still a nice set of improvements I dare to say. There are a couple changes to the campaign, in that locations in the map won't be visible until they become accessible. Not much of a novelty if you have played the campaign before but I feel it adds to the experience fo…
- Beta v7.12, Achievements - 30 March 2018
Hi everyone, the "current" branch has been updated to Beta v7.12. Here's what's new: - Archer's skill Bird Killer deals extra damage to Hawkmen. - Sorting added to campaign setup recruiting screen. - Updated spawn positions on most large maps. - Added status ailment effects to some skills. - Updated height reach of all weapons and skills. - Advance and Jump cannot be used if walk range is reduced to zero. - Class specific skills introduced. - Achievements. - More popular online maps displayed first in map editor by default. - On screen directional arrows for skill target selection removed. Quite some work done as you can see. Achievements made it to the headline as it's the last of my objectives for the Early Access stage. There are eight of them at the moment, more will be added, with rewards, in the near future. I received some suggestions and I introduced sorting of recruits. Some pe…

- Beta v7.11, the Sorceress - 10 February 2018
Hi everyone, the "current" branch has been updated to Beta v7.11. Here's what's new: - Sorceress character added - Martial Artist class becomes Warrior - changed some class weapon types - Support and Counterattack become passive skills - changed Assassin's Execution skill - minor bugs fixed The main novelty of this update is the introduction of the eighth and final character: the Sorceress. As you would expect this character's strong point is magic power, with a great affinity for the dark element, which makes it deadly to Healers. I mentioned some changes to class weapon types: the Sorceress becomes the utiliser of Staves, meaning the Healer goes back to Knuckles as originally intended, and the Martial Artist class becomes Warrior and takes Hammers. Support and Counterattack are no longer innate characteristics of all characters, they are instead Passive skills that need to be acquired…

- Beta v7.10, the Assassin - 15 October 2017
Hi everyone, the "current" branch has been updated to Beta v7.10. Here's what's new: - assassin character added - rebalanced classes, skills and equipment - restructured the Help section - removed three-tiers online mode - campaign candidate units increased to 48 and high ranked unit made less common - fixed a bug on damage calculation including adjacent characters that can't attack the target - increased dead characters timeout - fixed a bug on HP/MP when comparing equipment As you can see, it's a big update, which explains why it has been a while since the last time. The highlight of this update is of course the Assassin! The Assassin is a melee unit with a high movement range and relatively low HP. It can acquire a skill that allows him to throw his knives and he can also use shurikens, although you cannot buy those in shops, you'll have to get them as loot or recruit units that come…
