Tim Cain might be best known as a co-creator of the original Fallout , but some of his most recent work has come with Obsidian on its The Outer Worlds series. While he’s currently consulting on The Outer Worlds 2 , Cain’s just shared a demo of the first game from just a year into its development, and it’s well worth checking out. In the video on his YouTube channel featuring this vertical slice - which he’s shown off with permission from Obsidian itself - Cain explains that it’s a vertical slice. What is that? Well, basically a limited section of the game which has to “look and play like the final game” and is shown to the publisher, which in this case was Private Division. Read more

The developer says his interest in any Fallout project he was pitched would mainly come down to one key element - "What's new about it?" We might not know much about The Outer Worlds 2 yet, but one little nugget that’s just emerged is that its devs are getting some helpful guidance from Fallout co-creator Tim Cain. If Starfield didn’t quite live up to your expectations, odds are you’re looking forward to playing Obsidian’s next interstellar RPG, which was announced back in 2021, whenever it arrives. While that point might still be a while off, here’s a little bit of insight into how its development is going. Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun , Cain, who served as a director for The Outer Worlds revealed that despite being now semi-retired, he’s currently consulting on its sequel, providing some feedback on the likes of level design and lore. “There’s stuff they’re trying to do in the sequel, that of course I can’t talk about, that I get pulled in on because it’s similar to stuff I’ve done in the past,” Cain said…

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition launched to entirely deserved incredulity over its dire performance problems , PC version included. Low framerates, stuttering, lighting glitches, texture popping, wonky shaders... if you could think of a technical woe, it was probably already undermining this remaster’s efforts to rework and enhance the original RPG ’s visuals. Publishers Private Division have since promised a series of updates to get the Spacer’s Choice Edition up to code, with the first of these – v1.1 – releasing late last week. I’ve given it a test on various graphics cards and credit where it’s due, it has bumped up general performance significantly, although many broken parts remain unmended. Read more
