• Virtual Idea Area becomes open source and free - 10 February 2026

  It's been almost 9 years since Virtual Idea Area has been released and in that time the virtual reality landscape has changed a lot. VIA has not. Rather than continue to charge money for an outdated application I have decided to make Virtual Idea Area open to anyone in its current state.Because of compatibility issues on many modern computers I have decided to suspend sales and distribution on Steam rather than just making the application free (but existing owners will still be able to install and use VIA as always). Instead, the final application build and source code have been made available on the home page.Many thanks to everyone who has bought and used Virtual Idea Area in these past 9 years!(Note: at time of writing VIA is still available for sale. This will change soon. Please do not buy the application and simply download the free version from the home page instead,)

  It's been about a month since Virtual Idea Area has been released and the response has generally been positive. Thanks everyone! ːsteamhappyː Since then I've been doing a lot of under-the-hood changes to prepare for new features and to keep the program code from becoming a big mess. I've had a bunch of great feature suggestions from the community which has helped me decide what to add next. The first big update is still a few weeks out (or maybe even months, depending on circumstances) but here's a little peek at one of the new features:
