- Former Sonic Mania devs are making an original 3D platformer - 2 October 2021
By most accounts, Sonic Mania is the best thing to come out of the venerable series in ages - an excellent tribute to the old games led by members of the fangame community. Several members of that team announced their own studio, Evening Star, back in 2019, and now we've finally got a few details on what they're making. "Evening Star is currently working on our debut title, a fully original 3D action platformer game powered by our Star Engine", the devs say on the newly-updated official site . The Star Engine is built to efficiently support "non-photorealistic rendering techniques", and "can be seen as the high definition companion to the Retro Engine" used to build Sonic Mania. The devs say they have a publishing partner lined up, and more details are coming "soon". (They're also looking to do some hiring, if you're in the market for a development job.) It's Thursday, and now that the Epic Games Store Mega Sale is over, we're back to getting peeks at the upcoming free PC games that will be available next week on the Epic Games Store. Sonic the Hedgehog is getting an official Lego set featuring Sega's iconic mascot and his Green Hill Zone. The set's design was created by 24-year-old UK Sega fan Viv Grannell, who uploaded it to the Lego's Ideas platform. The response to her idea was positive, and Lego then got in touch. Remember when the very first Sonic the Hedgehog film trailer emerged , and it was rather unexpectedly set to Gangsta's Paradise? We've now moved on to slightly more up-to-date rap, as the official movie song is a collaboration between Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty & Sueco the Child. Sure. You can watch the music video for Speed Me Up below, which features lyrics such as "ladies love my speed" and "leave my knuckles, attack me for my finance". To be fair, the chorus is surprisingly catchy, and will probably be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Something a little less fun, however, is the recent news regarding the studio behind Sonic's redesign. - Sonic Mania joins the October Humble Monthly bundle - 24 September 2019
I thought it was a little strange that only Battletech was revealed as the single early unlock game for October's Humble Monthly bundle. But now, Sonic Mania has also been announced as a second title in the forthcoming bundle. You'll get access to both games immediately if you sign up to Humble Monthly for 10/$12 . The remaining games in the October bundle will then be confirmed and made available next Friday. Sonic Mania is an exciting new addition to the bundle, as it's been very positively received since release back in 2017. After years of misfires, it feels like a classic 2D platformer that truly celebrates and builds upon the roots of the series. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. With Sonic Mania , a modder was put in charge of creating a new Sonic game with official backing. Decades after Sonic the Hedgehog came to PC, the modding scene had shown some incredible creativity, from a version of Sonic 1 where Dr. Robotnik is capturing animals, to another where you go fishing. But one of the more popular mods came in the form of Sonic Megamix, which introduced new characters and moves. Its creator, Christian Whitehead, went on to create the definitive version of Sonic CD , but it’s Sonic Mania that got Sega’s nod, with the Plus add-on reintroducing some old friends. (more…)
- Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been delayed into next year - 24 May 2019
Paramount's much-maligned Sonic the Hedgehog movie project has been delayed by a little over three months, and will now release on 14th February, 2020. The Sonic movie was originally scheduled to hit cinemas on 7th November this year - until, that is, fan ridicule reached fever-pitch following the release of the film's first trailer last month. There was already deep scepticism surrounding the art choices Paramount had made in reimagining Sonic for the big screen, beginning almost immediately with the very first character reveal . However, when the world finally got a proper look at movie Sonic in action, the entire cinematic endeavour was hit with a tidal wave of online disapproval. - Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer reveals his horrible human teeth - 30 April 2019
I was unprepared for Sonic the Hedgehog to have human teeth. Seeing as chilli dogs are his favourite food yet he eats them without soaking the bun in milk, I suppose I knew that Sonic wouldn’t have the mouth and teeth of a real hedgehog in our world. I was still not ready for human teeth and weird lips. The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie (or Sonic the Hedgepig, as it’ll likely be named in the UK) has arrived, starring a CGI hedgepig voiced by Ben Schwartz (best known as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation) alongside human actors including Jim Carrey and James Marsden, and I just wasn’t ready for the teeth.
