  • Reverting the default release back to 2022.6.1 - 4 October 2022

We have now restored GameMaker 2022.6.1.26 as the default IDE version for this product, as this is the last GameMaker version which actually supports UWP. (We can see that many people using this product have already performed this step and are already using the 2022.6.1 branch within the "Betas" screen for this product, so there is no longer any need to do this.) You do need to ensure you're also using the older 2022.6.1 runtimes, as newer runtimes cannot build UWP projects! If you do want to use the 2022.8.1 we had set live previously (bearing in mind that it does not support UWP!), then you will find this on the "2022.8" branch in the Betas section (right-click GameMaker in your Steam Library and choose "Properties" and then "Betas"). However, future GameMaker releases will no longer be applied to this legacy UWP product.

  • 2022.8 Release - 8 September 2022

August’s release focuses on a lot of clean-up as we head towards an LTS release later in the year - some old or underused platforms have now been removed; many project-saving, performance, or stability changes have been made; and we have made a big improvement to tile-encoding in rooms, which does require a change in project version because older GameMaker versions will not be able to read those tile layers (so please do read the release notes linked-to below!). In addition to those very important stability changes, we also added: Feather has a lot more customisation options in Preferences; several more filter types can be found in the Room Editor; new audio functions/arguments so you can control playback more easily; the browser-based platforms now support the use of virtual keys and clipboard functionality in your games; and rollback now supports chat functionality. You will also find…

  • Updated June Release (2022.6.1.26/40) - 29 July 2022

This is an important bug-fix update to the original .0.23 release, as it fixes several in-game bugs and also some submission issues for console developers. There are also some more fixes for Feather and various other improvements throughout. Please see the release notes for the full info: IDE Notes Runtime Notes

  • 2022.6 Release - 30 June 2022

June’s release brings Feather for everyone who wants to try it, and includes lots of fixes for Feather and also the current Syntax Errors system; adds 5 more Filter types you can use in your games; introduces more functionality when creating and using your extensions; brings microphone support to the Opera GX target; changes the Switch crash-reporter to be Nintendo’s own system; and fixes a number of issues with the collision system. Be aware that this release updates the SDK versions you will need for a number of platforms - almost all consoles require newer versions now and also you might need to update your NDK for Android YYC - so please do see the Required SDKs FAQ for further information. Please also review the whole of the IDE and the runtime notes carefully, as there are a lot of changes and things to be aware of in this new release. Required SDKs FAQ IDE Release Notes Runtime R…

  • Updated May Release (2022.5.1.14) - 7 June 2022

Please note that this is currently only for Windows users! Mac users, we're very sorry for the extra delay, but we have a final issue to fix first before we can release the update on Steam, so you will continue to see 2022.3 for a little longer. If you're excited to upgrade asap, then remember you can use the non-Steam version also. Welcome to the new May 2022.5 version! We hope you find it worth the little wait since March’s release. This is a very comprehensive and exciting change to a lot of the underlying GameMaker tooling and functionality - although, if all goes to plan you perhaps won’t even notice most of our hard work. Even with all the changes to our build system, the installers, the IDE, and most of the runtime tools, we still found time to introduce some new features and so you can now enjoy the new Sound Inspector and its waveform visualisation, the new in-game timers syste…

  • 2022.3 Release - 31 March 2022

Say hello to GameMaker! (or indeed your pick of こんにちは , 안녕하세요 , cześć, or ciao) 2022.3 IDE changes several branding names and does away with the concept of picking a choice of code editor before you start your project and instead allows you to pick the editor style you want, when you want it; ships with 4 new localisations (Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Italian); adds a new dropdown to pick if you want compressed QOI images or not and whether to drop back to the old .png system instead; and several new filter types have been added for you to use in your games. Runtime changes introduce Opera GX YYC support for everyone; enables video playback functionality on almost all platforms (UWP is not being implemented); two new audio falloff models have been added: audio_falloff_inverse_distance_scaled and audio_falloff_exponent_distance_scaled; and changes all Ubuntu builds to use Steam’s new L…

  • 2022.2.1 Update - 9 March 2022

This is a small but very important update to fix running games on Windows 7, an issue with Included Files which could cause Opera GX games to get stuck when loading, and also to add a warning dialog when trying to open a "too new" project. For the full details, see IDE Notes Runtime Notes

  • 2022.2 Release - 24 February 2022

2022.2.0.614 introduces a new ability to create text tracks/instances and animate these within your sequences, then draw the text later in-game. It also changes a long-time GameMaker behaviour that arrays will make and edit a copy when you pass an array into a function, and so we have added an option to maintain the old way if you want. As well as these two important additions, there is the ability to send text to a secure websocket, to define colours in the code editor using CSS web standard values and for this to appear correctly in your game, and also a range of important bug fixes. You can read more about all those on the accompanying release blog. Please note that projects created or opened in this version and future versions are NOT backwards compatible with 2022.1 or older versions, due to the new Text-In-Sequences functionality. Any such projects will be flagged as "read-only" w…

  • 2022.1.1 Update - 7 February 2022

2022 Update 1 is rolling out now to fix some of the biggest issues in the original release - IDE is now v2022.1.1.610 and Runtime is now v2022.1.1.483 IDE Release Notes Runtime Release Notes Full details can be found on the usual release notes pages above, but this one fixes games crashing on Windows 7, cases where using the Mac IDE to build for macOS couldn't find the game executable, that games could not connect to Steam properly on startup, and some more collision issues.

  • 2022.1.0 - 27 January 2022

Welcome to 2022.1! This IDE fixes a number of stability or performance issues reported over the last couple of releases, plus a number of hotkey support issues in various editors. It also adds extra functionality into the Inspector, including the ability to apply a filter/effect target to a single specified layer in the Room Editor (also via new in-game functions), and a number of productivity improvements and misc UI tweaks to make editing your projects faster and easier. Be aware that this release ends support for our Remote Worker tool and so this is not part of the installer any more. Going forward, please just use the Windows and Mac IDEs directly on your machines. The matching runtime version changes the format of all images in-game to lower build times and package sizes, adds the ability to connect to secure websockets on almost all platforms, fixes a performance issue building l…

  • 2.3.7 Update 1 (2.3.7.606) - 9 December 2021

An important collection of stability and performance fixes, plus some of the other issues commonly-reported in the original 2.3.7 release. IDE Notes (All the changes are at the top) Runtime notes (again, all at the top)

  • 2.3.7 Release - 25 November 2021

2.3.7 brings the ability to sign in to GMS2 using an Opera single sign-on account if you wish, adds support for a new "nullish" operator in your code, and introduces three more filter layer types your can use in your rooms as well as enabling the Inspector for use in your rooms. This release also sees several performance increases (such as native Mac M1 architecture support for GMS2 itself) and some load time boosts for opening your projects and also for games starting at the end of builds. This release also raises Spine support to require v4.0. Please be aware this updated Spine runtime will require you to re-export your Spine images using v4.0 before they will work again in GMS2! The matching runtime version updates a number of the SDKs GMS2 requires during builds (so please see our setup guides if you have issues building projects) and fixes an issue with Android API 31+ with Android…

  • 2.3.6 Release - 28 October 2021

2.3.6 introduces a new design to the Start Page and the concept of Template projects (which you can turn your own projects into if you wish), plus support for a new Filters layer in the Room Editor which allows you to quickly and easily add special effects into your games! As well as the new things, it brings a lot of stability fixes in the IDE, such as changing the default renderer on Windows to Direct3D and stopping a fair number of crashes throughout the IDE. In-game, it fixes a number of issues with precise collisions (especially with scaled-up small sprites) on all targets and also resolves a number of issues with the new OperaGX target we released in 2.3.5, so now your OperaGX games can do more and will work better. Please note there is also a bit of clean-up of old code and variable/event names, so please see the important changes section below in case any of this applies to you…

  • 2.3.5 Release - 30 September 2021

2.3.5 brings a lot of stability fixes and continues the improvements to the product enabled by the new renderer and input/output systems introduced in 2.3.4. However, we also enabled the Inspector within the Sprite Editor, added new UI in Preferences to allow you to redefine the hotkeys GMS2 uses throughout the product, and introduced several other small quality-of-life tweaks which you can read about by following the links below. There are of course also a number of important bug fixes, so (as ever) please do read the release notes carefully. IDE changes/fixes In-game changes/fixes

  • 2.3.4 Update 1 - 10 September 2021

A quick update to remove an issue with some projects not loading properly if those projects contain groups in the room manager's order tab and also to stop renaming assets also performing hotkey commands if you happened to type the required characters. Please ensure you also update your runtime in order to get the full project-loading fix. (Needs to be IDE v2.3.4.580 Runtime v2.3.4.442)

  • 2.3.4 Release - 8 September 2021

2.3.4 changes a lot of the underlying systems for input/output and how the IDE is rendered, allowing us to fix some longstanding differences Windows IDE vs Mac IDE and also to better support modern input devices and new OSes going forward. You may not notice much change and this might look like a small release, but there have been a lot of changes, fixes and improvements made throughout the IDE. There is also an overhaul in the versions of Visual Studio now required. Almost all platforms which used VS2015 before now require Visual Studio 2019, so please ensure you install this if you haven't already and also check your GMS2 Preferences paths are now correct, otherwise you will have errors when building YYC platforms/UWP/consoles. More information and a link to the Required SDKs can be found further down these release notes or on the Help menu inside GMS2 itself. We also squeezed in two…

  • 2.3.3 Update 1 - 22 July 2021

Changes since IDE 2.3.3.570: Code Editor: A further fix for MMB/F1 on functions with the same name as its Script to place the caret on the correct line even in fullscreen code editors in separate workspace tabs Image Editor: Fixed the Reverse Frames menu command not working in IDE v2.3.3.570 Undo: Stopped GMS2 going unstable when undo-ing placing an asset in the Room Editor Sprite Editor: Fixed the ability to add multiple images at once Note: We are aware that if the images are different sizes, then this currently triggers a redundant file-watcher prompt Changes since runtime 2.3.3.434 In-Game: Fixed most ways of calling a function which is in a global array so it no longer returns an "object undefined" error In-Game: Fixed a code error "Object1.argument0(...) not set before reading it." when setting "self" or "global" struct values and accessing this value inside a function Reverted th…

  • 2.3.3 Release - 13 July 2021

2.3.3 is an important stability release for a number of different features: changes to source control to resolve Github authentication issues; support for using Android NDK 22, Android Studio 4.2, and the latest Xcode on Big Sur; optimisations for the amount of work done by the IDE when displaying your projects, reducing CPU usage; and a number of performance fixes in-game also. At the same time, it does introduce several new features, including: the Inspector has been greatly extended to support multiple additional editors; a big change to how undo/redo worked within the IDE, giving you more flexibility and a better experience; you can now declare default values for your functions' optional arguments; and in-game you can now support two mouse thumb buttons on Desktop platforms. There are of course also a number of important bug fixes, so please do read the full release notes carefully:…

  • Runtime 426 released - 16 April 2021

Just the one change to fix runtime 423 stalls on game_end() or gc_collect() and the accompanying gradual increases in memory seen in some games.

  • Small 2.3.2 runtimes/in-game bug-fix update - 14 April 2021

Note that you must update to the matching runtime 423 before you will get any of these changes. * Fixed that if you tried to build iOS using the Windows IDE it could error with "The variable Xcode is not defined" (when the Mac IDE worked fine with that same Xcode install) * Fixed an issue stopping ARM builds of Ubuntu YYC * Fixed an issue where projects which contain a large number of audio files could fail to build * Added a compiler optimisation to speed up texture page generation during builds * Added a small optimisation to speed up loading projects * Fixed a CPU usage issue with the garbage collector, so now usage values should be much lower again on all platforms and also gives a slight performance boost compared to 2.3.1 * Re-fixed that the Animation End event does not trigger reliably when the sprite frames and game speed result in very small values
