- Blazing Chrome delivers the Contra spiritual sequel we've been waiting for - 21 July 2019
They are the side-scrolling games of 16-bit legend. Contra 3: The Alien Wars and Contra: The Hard Corps saw Konami's run-and-gun series reach the zenith of its powers but since then, the franchise has been neglected and the magic has gone. Until now. Brazilian indie developer JoyMasher has produced the 'spiritual sequel' we need - and indeed deserve - in the form of Blazing Chrome, a love letter to Contra and other 16-bit classics. It's a perfect blend of detailed, period-appropriate 2D pixel art, expertly crafted stages - and it's available now on all modern platforms, from Switch to PS4/Xbox to PC. - Blazing Chrome attacks aggressively into stores - 11 July 2019
Who needs Konami when you’ve got studios like JoyMasher ready to pick up the slack? Blazing Chrome is undeniably a tribute to the classic Contra series of run-and-gun platform shooters – among my favourites. Big guns and bigger bosses, one hit deaths and the occasional level made out of meat and filled with Giger-knockoff monsters. It’s not all Contra though – there’s a little bit of Metal Slug in there too, some unlockable ninjas and (of course) local co-op play. Contra is back next month on July 11th – not in name, but undeniably in spirit. Blazing Chrome by Joymasher is exactly my kind of run-and-gun platformer. Loud, fast, and packed with mean-looking robots and weird biomechanical monsters with far too many eyes and teeth. Today, along with announcing the release date, they put out a new trailer showing off even more of the game (complete with some perspective-shifting set-pieces) and a pair of unlockable ninja characters. - Blazing Chrome is the Contra successor we need right now - 3 January 2019
Somehow, I’ve been writing here for over a year and haven’t said a word about run n’ gun shooter Blazing Chrome – something I’m rectifying now, thanks to developers JoyMasher releasing some new footage of their upcoming game. It is utterly, unapologetically a tribute to Konami’s classic Contra series – specifically to my favourite; Contra Hard Corps on the Mega Drive/Genesis. That means constant swarms of enemies, bosses every thirty seconds or so and explosions that just don’t stop. The game is due out in “early 2019”. Take a peek at its robot-infested world below. - Watch a blistering Blazing Chrome boss fight in this new gameplay video - 2 January 2019
Austin described the side-scrolling retro-shooter Blazing Chrome as "a perfect successor to Contra and Metal Slug" last year , saying that it's a "tough, fast-paced game" that probably would have been a big hit if it had been released in 1995. Instead it was slated for launch in 2018, which ultimately didn't happen, but developer JoyMasher says it's coming soon and in the meantime, you can watch it strut its stuff in this new gameplay video.  Watching the trailer, two things are immediately apparent: One, I will be terrible at this game, and two, it looks great .
