Co-op Nazi-mangling spinoff Wolfenstein: Youngblood launches on July 26th, just before my birthday. It looks to be a gift that literally keeps giving, too; the Deluxe edition comes with a ‘Buddy Pass’, so you can invite a special someone to join you on your power-armoured rampage. Set some years after Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus , it casts one or two players as BJ Blazkowicz and Anya’s twin daughters, now old enough to hunt Nazis for themselves with the aid of matching super-suits. Hey all, Since our latest patch, some users have reported the following issue since updating to this week's game update for Wolfenstein II: “The video driver has run out of dedicated video memory. Your gameplay will be negatively affected.” We apologize for the inconvenience that this latest patch has caused. This message is appearing when attempting to run the game at higher settings than the GPU can handle. We have put a potential hotfix candidate that fixes the messaging prompts into the Public Beta branch. This hotfix allows players to get past the message on load screens and continue playing the game. However, in order to get the message to stop appearing, you’ll need to lower the graphical settings to an appropriate level that the GPU can handle. - Germany relaxes ban on Nazi symbols in video games - 9 August 2018
After decades of banning swastikas and such symbols of Nazis and other “unconstitutional organisations” from games, German authorities will now potentially allow them – if they serve an artistic or educational purpose. This “social adequacy” clause has allowed these symbols to be used in other artistic mediums but wasn’t previously applied to video games (which only became art, as we all know, through BioShock Infinite in 2013), requiring developers to replace or otherwise remove the iconography to get a German release. This change isn’t a green light for swastikas galore, as laws controlling the symbols still apply, but the German ratings board are now willing to consider their artistic merit in games. (more…)
- Bethesda's QuakeCon 2018 Steam sale has begun - 8 August 2018
Even though you won't be able to play Fallout 76 on Steam at launch, almost everything else in Bethesda's back catalogue is discounted on Valve's platform this weekend, just in time for QuakeCon 2018.  While I can't find a dedicated Steam page for the sale just yet, probably because it began very recently and Dead Cells is currently occupying the homepage, you can see the discounts by heading to Bethesda's publisher page on Steam and scrolling down to 'specials'. Some highlights include Prey on-sale for £10/$15 , and its roguelite-style DLC Mooncrash for $15/£9.74, which is 25% off. 2016's Doom is just $10/£7.49 ( Fanatical has it slightly cheaper ), which is reasonable for what's probably the best singleplayer FPS of the modern age.  Fallout 4's GOTY edition is £20/$30, matching its best Steam price to date…
- Bethesda s new VR bits include Prey mimicking prop hunt - 11 June 2018
Not satisfied with bringing snow trolls and hellspawn to expensive cyber goggles, Bethesda are bringing two more of their games to VR Prey and Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and Prey: Typhon Hunter are set in their respective universes and, of the two, Typhon Hunter seems the most interesting. It s a prop hunt-like bit of multiplayer hide and seek, in which five players are mimics pretending to be everyday objects, and one player is Morgan Yu, trying to find and kill them. “Typhon Hunter is a deadly game of cat and mouse,” say Bethesda , “except in this instance the cat is sometimes a trashcan or a bottle of cleaning supplies and the mouse has a shotgun.” (more…)

The Wolfenstein series is getting a VR game. Wolfenstein Cyberpilot casts players as hackers who can take over Nazi technology and turn it on its masters. Cyberpilot was announced at Bethesda's E3 Showcase. There's no word on platforms so far, but the game will be playable at the show. Read more…

The splendid new line of Wolfenstein first-person shooters from MachineGames will continue next year with Wolfenstein: Youngblood, a cooperative game starring BJ Blazkowicz’s twin daughters. Picture for a moment the triple-A hero. He is Kratos grappling a gigantic serpent on mighty waves; he is Call of Duty's Jack Mitchell acquiring a magic robot arm at his best friend's funeral. Sporting abs (or guns) that shine like justice, he is fast, deadly and remorseless. At his logical conclusion, the triple-A hero is Kurtz from Apocalypse Now sat in the dark jungle, whispering tales of annihilation, a catalogue of army medals in his back-pocket. In film, the only recourse left for the Stallones and Lundgrens of 80s fame is parody. These days we tend toward John Wick over The Terminator, although key traits - unquenchable bloodlust, highly efficient - still remain.
