- A Chrono Trigger revival seems inevitable at this point, with its creator admitting 'I want to do something' after recent mistranslation incident - 9 May 2025
It's been a tumultuous year for Chrono Trigger enthusiasts. Rumors of a potential remake have cropped up several times, only to be quickly debunked. I can't blame fans for their gullibility: it really is very weird that Square Enix hasn't done anything with the Chrono series for so long, though the publisher did indicate in March that it intends to honor the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger with projects that "go beyond the world of the game.".. - Certain digital PS3 and Vita titles are "expiring" and no one knows why - 10 April 2022
Some players are reporting that certain PlayStation games like Chrono Cross are "expiring" on PS3 and PlayStation Vita. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition launched earlier this week, but now certain players are claiming that legally purchased, digital versions of PSOne Classics like Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger are no longer playable, as reported by Kotaku . Twitter user Christopher Foose shared an image showing their digital copy of Chrono Cross with an expiry date of 12/31/1969, and that the remaining time to play the game had expired, and is no longer playable on PS3 or Vita. Foose goes on to explain that they had tested Chrono Trigger earlier that day (April 8) on their PS3, and it had run fine and had no expiration date. Talking with the official PlayStation support system did not help with the issue either. And later on, other users showed games like Final Fantasy IX an…

- 4 years after its final patch, Chrono Trigger on PC is getting a new update with 21:9 support - 9 March 2022
The venerable Square RPG Chrono Trigger debuted on PC in February 2018, and the port's reception at the time was not good . Patches changed the picture dramatically, however, and it now holds a "very positive" ranking on Steam across more than 5,000 user reviews. The final update arrived in August 2018, five months later, and everyone seemed satisfied—but now it appears that there's another final patch on the way... Read more.
- Chrono Trigger on PC gets faster battles and 21:9 support - 9 March 2022
There's a new Chrono Trigger update on the way this week, that's adding some welcome improvements to one of the best JRPGs on PC . As revealed by Square Enix Japan in a new trailer, as opposed to a press release, the next Chrono Trigger patch features a number of welcome improvements to the PC version of the game. Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs ever made and it finally made its appearance on Steam over four years ago , where it was very apparent that it was a port of the mobile game - and not a great one . After several months, Chrono Trigger's supposedly "final" patch arrived in August 2018 , complete with customisable key bindings. Now, after all this time, Square Enix has announced a new update for the PC and smartphone versions of Chrono Trigger. The patch is hitting this Friday, March 11, featuring useful quality-of-life changes such as improvements to auto-battle speed, pr…
- Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is a remaster of the original, coming to Nintendo Switch in April - 9 February 2022
At tonight's February 2022 Nintendo Direct , Nintendo and Square Enix announced a Chrono Cross Remaster – in line with the sorts of things we've seen with the re-releases in the Final Fantasy series ( most significantly, Final Fantasy 8 Remaster ). The game, which you can pre-order from today via the Nintendo eShop, will launch on the system on April 7. You will be able to turn off enemy encounters in the game, as well as play that eponymous Radical Dreamers portion of the game – a side story that connects both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger. Until now, we've not been able to play this game outside of the SNES adapater that was only available in Japan. So that's a pretty good excuse to jump back into the game! The announcement of this remaster links back to an old report from March 2021, in which Forever Entertainment announced it would be working with Square Enix on remakes of "severa…

- Owlboy creator's Chrono Break mockup is a beautiful teaser for a sequel that will never exist - 27 August 2018
15 years ago, there was still hope that the dream team behind Chrono Trigger would reunite to make another Chrono game. That hope was mostly fueled by a trademark for a game called Chrono Break, which was never officially announced. Square Enix never talked about it directly, but here and there over the years some of the developers mentioned being interested in making a sequel. It didn't happen. But if it did, maybe it would've looked something like this. This mockup of Chrono Break is the work of pixel artist Simon Andersen, who created Owlboy and worked on this project as a way to wind down from its long development. "After finishing a massive game project spanning a decade of development, I was ready to tackle a new series. I had already known for years I wanted to explore a hypothetical sequel to Chrono Trigger, Cross and Radical Dreamers, but it took me a full year until…

- Square's messy Chrono Trigger PC port gets its fifth and final improvements update - 6 August 2018
Six months after launch, Square Enix has released its final big update for Chrono Trigger on PC, wrapping up the publisher's plans to improve its widely derided port of the classic Super Nintendo J-RPG. You might recall that PC fans were briefly elated when Chrono Trigger surprise-launched on Steam back in February. However, players quickly discovered that Square Enix's port was plagued with issues, from poor performance to an unwieldy interface and blurry sprite art - the latter two woes inherited from the game's mobile version. To its credit, Square pledged to address fans complaints, and has already released a number of updates for Chrono Trigger on PC. These added, among other things, original-style sprites, an improved UI, and better controller and keyboard support. Read more…
- Five months after its woeful PC port, Chrono Trigger receives its final patch - 4 August 2018
When the PC port of Chrono Trigger came out in February , it made one of the best-loved RPGs of the past 25 years look like a shoddy mobile game. Wonky controls, a fiddly UI and a strange pixel smoothing filter had fans incensed, prompting Square Enix to release a series of major patches to set it right. The fifth and final one arrived yesterday, and—judging by Steam reviews—the game is finally where it should've been in the first place. The patch lets you rebind keyboard keys and (some) gamepad buttons, and adds new mouse functionality, such as the ability to cancel an action with a right click, or move characters by dragging your mouse. It also adds an Extras section to the main menu, which lets you view a movie of all the game's cutscenes, watch any endings you've unlocked, and peruse illustrations of the characters and setting. The update fixes various b…
