  • Weapon Update has arrived! - 15 October 2017

Three new weapons has been added to the game: Cryosaber - A short blade, encased in a layer of smooth, clear ice. With a great slash, the blade channels its wielder psychic power. Wingrazor - A weapon of beautiful terror, depicting an outlandish mythical creature. It can be hurled at foes, and called back, soaring effortlessly through the air. Gunaxe - A vicious scythe, married elegantly with a functioning gun barrel. Like most guns, it can be loaded and fired. Getting your hands on these new weapons will require defeating their owners in a deadly duel. After getting all three weapons a new Challenge awaits for the most hardcore of players. Unfortunately, the Good Ending still seems to be out of reach...

  • Slow stabber Immortal Planet is out now - 29 July 2017

I wrote about isometric action-RPG Immortal Planet two months ago when a release date was announced : based on early gameplay footage I liked what I saw, but I wasn’t sure about the combat, which looked repetitive. Well it’s just come out for real now, and the launch trailer suggests the swordplay might be more varied than I first thought. It’s a ‘Souls-like’ (drink) game based on slow-paced melee combat. You’re not going to rush in whirling your sword around your head and hope for the best: you have to dodge and block enemy attacks and manage your rapidly-depleting stamina bar, as well as strike when enemies are tired. I like the aesthetic, and it’s from the creator of turn-based stealth hack-and-slash Ronin, which was rather good . (more…)

  • Immortal Planet is an action-RPG 'Souls-like' from the creator of Ronin - 24 July 2017

Tomasz Wacławek, the creator of the 2D turn-based stealth-combat game Ronin , has a new project arriving later this week called Immortal Planet , an isometric action-RPG he described as "a love letter to Dark Souls."  Immortal Planet puts a priority on a careful and deliberate approach to combat, rather than twitchy reflexes. Stamina management is also vital, as exhausted enemies are more susceptible to attacks, while fresh ones can quickly turn the tables on careless players. Levels are built around single-checkpoints with multiple unlockable shortcuts that help ensure forward progression, and of course each level has its own multi-stage boss fight.  "I wanted to create a game that would be my own take on emerging genre of Souls-like games. For me, the core of a Souls-like game is the methodical combat where patience and focus are much more important than reflexes," Wac…

  • Immortal Planet trailer shows off Souls-inspired action - 29 May 2017

I’m quite excited about Immortal Planet . It’s from the same Polish developer as Ronin, a turn-based stealth hack-and-slash, which I played a bit of and really enjoyed (and I wasn’t alone Marsh liked it too ). The new game is a real-time isometric action-RPG that creator Tomasz Wac awek describes as ‘Souls-like’. You’re not going to be able to go in and button mash because the focus is on slow-paced, precise combat, where not getting hit is as important and landing a strike. We now know when it’s coming out some time in July and there’s a new four-minute gameplay video with commentary to enjoy. …
